Washington - A bipartisan group of lawmakers called on Thursday on US President George W Bush to set a plan for the US withdrawal from Iraq, and said they would introduce legislation requiring him to do so.
The two Democrats and two Republicans, including two former presidential candidates, said they expect a cool reception to their proposal from leaders in the US Congress, but are counting on spurring public debate on US goals in Iraq.

Republican Congressman Walter Jones’ Statement on Iraq Withdrawal
16 June 2005June 15, 2005
Dear Fellow Eastern North Carolinian,
In recent days there has been considerable press coverage on my position on America’s presence in Iraq. Despite what some media accounts have said, I want to make it crystal clear that I am NOT in favor of any immediate withdrawal nor do I support setting an end date at which time all troops must be out of Iraq.
What I do support is a public discussion of our goals and the future of our military involvement in that country. The (…) -

House of Representatives wins one for the People!- votes to curb Patriot Act
16 June 2005WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday defied President Bush by approving a measure making it harder for federal agents to secretly gather information on people’s library reading habits and bookstore purchases.
The House voted 238-187 to scale back the government’s powers to conduct secret investigations that were authorized by the Patriot Act, a post-Sept. 11 anti-terrorism law.

IS THE WEST CIVILISED?
15 June 2005Civilised and cultured societies are not revengeful. They are not violent. They are not racist. They reflect and analyse. Not react. Civilised nations are not greedy and selfish. Cultured people don’t lecture. They listen too. Belief in universal justice, fairness and equality make a nation cultured. The Civilised don’t impose their ’way of life’ and their values upon others at gunpoint. The civilised don’t talk to cats and dogs only. They don’t eat and f* meat. They know meanings of love (…)

1999: Bush says, "Detecting Terrorism on US Soil High Priority" "Airplanes used for WMD"
15 June 2005There’s allot of imagination being used in this speech, too bad he failed to read his own words and warnings huh? Too bad that nobody could have imagined it. Is it inconceivable that they would "fix" the intelligence to distract people from their gross negligence and incompetence on S11 to engage in an unprovoked war because they failed to heed their own warnings? Progressive and Libertarian views on common ground in the Fear Age?
15 June 2005Progressive and Libertarian views on common ground in the Fear Age?
As some of you know, someone close to me is involved in the Libertarian Party. As such is the case, I get to hear quite a bit about them.
While we differ in opinion and belief on many issues with regard to economic justice, environmental policy, or any expansion of government services or regulation, there are a few very critical issues the the LP agrees whole-heartedly with we Progressives on:

Twelve Year Old: Why are they recruiting at our Middle School?
15 June 2005Last Friday, June 10, I entered the cafeteria in FHT Middle School in South Burlington, VT only to be greeted by a strange sight. A large screen had been set up on the stage, and adults were milling around and passing out flyers.
I glanced down at a flyer on the nearest table, and was indignant to find that this invasion of my middle schools cafeteria had been orchestrated by none other than the Police and the Vermont National Guard.
The point of the presentation was to encourage middle (…)
