On Feb. 15, 2003, as millions of people worldwide took to the streets to protest the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq, Marine Lance Cpl. Michael Hoffman was in Kuwait, awaiting deployment to Baghdad.
Two years later, Hoffman, 25, is a civilian on the lecture circuit, introducing himself as an Iraq Veteran Against the War. On March 19, when war opponents plan to converge near Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., to mark the date of the invasion, (…)

United States government, 2005: If it walks like a goose... (Part I)
22 February 2005Previous readers know I can be a little, well, uh...rough on the Bushies, for lack of a better term (like, say, “unapologetically brutal”). That’s OK; I’ve never had a problem calling a spade a spade, or, for that matter, a scoundrel a scoundrel. Typically, though, as a matter of personal preference, I’ve pretty much tried to stay away from using vulgar or shocking language. Since November 2, however, some may have noticed I’ve not shied away from rolling out the f-word.
It is a strong (…) -
WHITE HOUSE SCRAMBLES TO EXPLAIN FAKE REPORTER IN ITS PRESS CORPS
22 February 2005by Brian Kelly
Internet researchers have uncovered new evidence that contradicts the Bush Administration’s claims about James Guckert, a Republican activist allegedly involved in criminal activities and linked to an incident involving a major breach of national security. Guckert, operating as "Jeff Gannon," was granted daily access to White House press briefings for more than two years as a "reporter" for Talon News.
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan stated that Guckert was (…) -
SCOTT RITTER SAYS U.S. PLANS JUNE ATTACK ON IRAN, ‘COOKED’ JAN. 30 IRAQI ELECTION RESULTS
21 February 2005Scott Ritter, appearing with journalist Dahr Jamail yesterday in Washington State, dropped two shocking bombshells in a talk delivered to a packed house in Olympia’s Capitol Theater. The ex-Marine turned UNSCOM weapons inspector said that George W. Bush has "signed off" on plans to bomb Iran in June 2005, and claimed the U.S. manipulated the results of the recent Jan. 30 elections in Iraq.
Olympians like to call the Capitol Theater "historic," but it’s doubtful whether the eighty-year-old (…) -
Congressman tells GOP crowd we really did find WMD in Iraq
21 February 2005WASHINGTON — It’s a good thing I went to the Conservative Political Action Conference this year. Otherwise I never would have known that, despite the findings of the authoritative David Kay report and every reputable media outlet on earth, the United States actually discovered weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, vindicating all of George W. Bush’s pre-war predictions. The revelation came not from some crank at Free Republic or hustler from Talon News, but from a congressman surrounded by (…)

19 yr old that Wanted Out of the Marines, Drowns at Boot Camp
20 February 2005In this image taken from WIS-TV, video, taken Feb. 7, 2005, on Parris Island, S.C., an unidentified Marine Corps drill instructor, far-left, back to camera, grabs Jason Tharp, far left, facing camera, by the collar, near a swimming pool. Tharp of Sutton, W.Va., drowned the next day, Feb. 8. at Parris Island while participating in a 25-meter swim that was part of a water-survival course. His family wants answers from the Marine Corps on the circumstances surrounding their son’s drowning (…)

Rice chooses Richard Jones for top Iraq position to reward him for helping steal millions?
20 February 2005Unanswered Questions Remain on Rice’s Iraq Pick
WASHINGTON — February 17 — Today Rep. Waxman asked for a full explanation of the role of Ambassador Richard Jones, Secretary of State Rice’s choice to head U.S. Iraq policy, in the steering of a lucrative fuel contract to an obscure Kuwaiti company. The text of the letter follows:
February 17, 2005
The Honorable Condoleezza Rice Secretary of State U.S. Department of State 2201 C Street, NW Washington, DC 20520
Dear Madam Secretary: (…) -
How America’s response to 9/11 unleashed an obscene nightmare
20 February 2005Mark Danner - toiling through official reports and transcripts of interviews with prisoners and witnesses, as well as conducting his own investigation in Iraq - has exposed the false piety in disavowals of responsibility by Bush and Donald Rumsfeld, and established official complicity in the abuse. Five days after 9/11, Vice-President Cheney emerged from the fortified burrow in which he’d been awaiting Armageddon and - glowering as blackly as the oil he no doubt dreams of - explained how the (…)

Money is NOT the measure of all things
20 February 2005Was just reading about Canada Health taking an ADHD med off the market. Was reading in E.F. Schumacher’s "Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered" that we have GOT to geta grip on the economic "matrix" where growers can’t afford to GROW organically but they are happy if they can BUY organic. What’s up with that?
This whole business paradigm we’ve been forced to live under HAS GOT TO CHANGE! Money/profit is NOT the measure of all things and we’d better start taking LIFE (…) -
Iran, Beware of the Attack Dog
20 February 2005by Uri Avnery
"Naive people believe that after all this, Bush would not risk more adventures of this kind. They are wrong."
It is not very flattering to be paraded like a Rottweiler on a leash, whose master threatens to let him loose on his enemies. But this is our situation now.
Vice President Dick Cheney threatened a few weeks ago that if Iran continues to develop its nuclear capabilities, Israel might attack her.
This week, President George Bush repeated this threat. If he were (…)
