George W. Bush must think domestic violence in the United States is on its way out.
Why else would he slash the Violence Against Women Program in his FY 2004 budget, which cut funding for desperately needed emergency shelters, crisis hotlines and other services to protect women from violence?
Domestic violence isn’t a problem anymore. It couldn’t be.
If it were really a problem, the Bush Administration wouldn’t propose to cut $3 million from the 2005 budget for (…)

Now on DVD: The Passion of the Bush
4 October 2004By Frank Rich
You can run but you can’t hide: Oct. 5 will bring the perfect storm in this year’s culture wars. It’s on that strategically chosen date, four Tuesdays before the election, that the DVD of "Fahrenheit 9/11" will be released along with not one but two new Michael Moore books. It’s also the release date of the equally self-effacing Ann Coulter’s latest rant, of a new DVD documentary, "Horns and Halos," that revisits the Bush mystery year of 1972, and of an R.E.M. album, "Around (…) -
Fox runs fake Kerry quotes
4 October 2004Plenty of news media analysts thought Senator John Kerry looked good at Thursday night’s presidential debate, but Fox News went a step further, posting a made-up news article on its Web site that quoted Kerry as gloating about his fine manicure and his "metrosexual" appearance.
Fox News quickly retracted the article, saying in an editor’s note on its Web site that the article "was written in jest and should not have been posted or broadcast." It said, "We regret the error, which occurred (…) -

Joseph Torre, voting systems and procurement director for the agency, confirmed that one machine was found, but assured board members it did not belong to Maryland.
"It wasn’t one of ours," he said. "All 16,009 units are present and accounted for."
"That takes your (…) -

4 October 2004Law Sends Sharers to Slammer By Katie Dean
A new anti-piracy bill in California gives law enforcement another tool to crack down on copyright infringement, but critics say it will only divert resources away from fighting more important crimes.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill last week requiring file swappers to provide a legitimate e-mail address when they share music or movies online, or be charged with a misdemeanor. The law goes into effect in January.

There’s No Debating Who’s the Better Candidate
4 October 2004by Barbra Streisand
I only hope that Thursday night’s debate finally sent a clear message to the undecided and swing voters in this country about who deserves to win the election come November 2 and lead this country back from where it has strayed. Thursday night we saw two very different men standing before us. John Kerry showed us his true colors. He was humble, where Bush was arrogant, he was elegant, where Bush was awkward, he was articulate, where Bush was unintelligent, he was (…) -
