Something in a Name
11 December 2009Most of my immediate male relatives are named Steve. There was Stephen A., my grandfather, who begot Stephen B., who begot Stephen R., who begot Stephen R. Jr., who has not begot anybody yet but another Steve cannot be far away. Stephen R. Sr., my brother, is inexplicably not Stephen C. (Chaires having a venerable Florida history on my mother’s side), and equally inexplicably it was not his first son Stephen who went to West Point, like himself and his father, but his second son Brian (…)

Have URL, Will Travel
9 December 2009When Geocities offed itself a few weeks ago, taking 32 megs of me with it, my optimism about the internet suffered a hefty, but also healthy, blow. I had learned, often the hard way, about the emphemerality of digital media, but it’s one thing to know something and another to do something about it. In this case, I don’t think there was anything I could have done about it except transfer my site to another host, which I have now done after the fact, but nothing could have saved the broken (…)

Is the President Overworked?
8 December 2009By David Glenn Cox
There is an old Firesign Theatre comedy piece, a parody of “The Price is Right,” where a woman contestant is asked, “Do you want what’s behind the door or what’s in the bag?”
She blurts out, “I’ll take the bag! Why… why this is a bag of shit!”
“Yes” the announcer answers, “but it’s really great shit!”
Two years ago CNBC, America’s first name in fascism, sent cutie pie Erin "Black Widow" Burnett to Dubai for live, on-sight interviews with all the movers and shakers (…) -

Obama’s Waterloo: The Afghan Lie
5 December 2009JAZZMAN CHRONICLES. DISSEMINATE FREELY.
“As Commander-in-Chief, I have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan. After 18 months, our troops will begin to come home.”
“Under the banner of … domestic unity and international legitimacy - and only after the Taliban refused to turn over Osama bin Laden - we sent our troops into Afghanistan. Within a matter of months, al Qaeda was scattered and many of its operatives were (…) -
A Smart and Simple Tax
4 December 2009The burden of taxation in the United States has been shifted from those who most benefit from our government to those who work the hardest and earn the least. This shrugging of responsibility is not only unfair, it fails to accomplish public policy goals required to move the economy out of recession and the environment out of crisis.
Uncorrected, the heavy burden of taxation borne by workers and small businesses today for the benefit of corporations and the wealthy elite will certainly (…) -
A RESPONSE TO HILLARY CLINTON’S ASSERTION THAT ALL NATIONS SHOULD PLAY A PART IN THE AFGHANISTAN MISSION
4 December 2009A RESPONSE TO HILLARY CLINTON’S ASSERTION THAT ALL NATIONS SHOULD PLAY A PART IN THE AFGHANISTAN MISSION
John Chuckman
Hillary Clinton, in a just-published piece on the Afghanistan mission (see note at bottom), offers us nothing helpful or enlightening, only boiler-plate American slogans, the kind of stuff you’d hear from some provincial Congressman giving a Fourth of July speech in a place like Muncie, Indiana.
Indeed, her use of the question-begging word “mission” in the title to (…)
