War without Borders: A Geopolitical Assessment of NATO
2 April 2009War without Borders: A Geopolitical Assessment of NATO NATO on its 60th anniversary
by José Miguel Alonso Trabanco
Global Research, April 2, 2009
NATO’s 60th anniversary is an event that has sparked a healthy dose of analytical thinking and debate concerning said organization’s historical role as well as its current purposes in the early 21st century. Let us explore the geopolitical context in which NATO first came into existence so that later we examine the alliance’s contemporary (…) -
What Now, America?
2 April 2009What Now, America?
Jill Ettinger
Like most Americans, I’ve been consumed with news about the circus our financial system has become, realizing this is probably just the first act of a much bigger show. And like many, I’ll admit my extremely limited knowledge of Wall Street dealings was never much of a concern to me. Yes, I’ve read Matt Taibbi’s enlightening piece in Rolling Stone (April 2009 issue) and Jake DeSantis’ resignation letter to AIG reprinted in the New York Times. I watch The (…) -
The Secessionist Option: Why Now?
2 April 2009The Secessionist Option: Why Now?
Ian Baldwin
It is a strange coincidence that just as the ship of the United States is groaning on the shoals of bankruptcy, leaking dollars like massive jets of seawater, at this precise moment a charismatic black American has risen out of relative obscurity in the lower decks to captain the ship.
But look! Are those phantoms I see, or real men, those masked Neo-Cons, dual-flag-lapel armchair warmongers, weapons and security services execs, rollicking (…) -
France recognises her responsibility to the military and civilian victims of her nuclear tests
1 April 2009The veterans of France’s nuclear testing, after years of futile approaches to military authorities and legal tribunals, all systematically dismissed or (if successful) referred to appeal by the ministry, have now won an apparently decisive victory.
For the first time, a Minister of Defense has now recognised a link, in principle, between some deaths and some illnesses (chiefly cancers) suffered by career servicemen, conscripts and civilians who took part in the France’s nuclear testing (…) -
The Nuclear Issue: Disarm and Live
1 April 2009On a planet without nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants
« Disarm and Live », beginning by liberating humankind from the threat of self-destruction by nuclear weapons, is the objective pursued by ACDN since its foundation in 1996 and by the international « Abolition 2000 » network. Now in 2009 it is more topical than ever.
ACT FOR TOMORROW
“Disarm and live” was the theme of the 3rd RID-NBC (Rally for International Disarmament, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) organised on 9-11 May (…) -
Let’s not Be Blackmailed by the War Cartel
1 April 2009Let’s not Be Blackmailed by the War Cartel
by Tobias Salander, Switzerland
In the 19th year of the war, the states of the US-UK-Germany war alliance are facing bankruptcy. Yet, instead of transforming the military-industrial complex into a peace economy and making the economic power serve the people, the wars are carried on, even extended – and states like Switzerland are attacked, in order to raise money for the empty war chest. Instead of following the guidelines of international law, (…) -

Remembering Land Day
31 March 2009Palestinians across the Middle East were due to commemorate Land Day today, marking the anniversary of clashes in 1976 in which six unarmed Palestinians were shot dead by the Israeli army as it tried to break up a general strike. Although Land Day is one of the most important anniversaries in the Palestinian calendar, sometimes referred to as the Palestinians’ national day, the historical event it marks is little spoken of and rarely studied. “Maybe its significance is surprising given (…)

No Galloway No Rice!
31 March 2009British MP George Galloway gave the first of his talks in Canada via a video feed from New York city. He as barred from entering Canada after a complaint to Canada’s neocon government from the Jewish Defence League. A federal court yesterday upheld the barring.
There was no such barring for war criminal George Bush less than 2 weeks before when he spoke in Calgary. Neither is there any barring expected when Condoleeza Rice visits Calgary May 13.
