Stephen Colbert’s Take at the White House Correspondents Dinner Transcript of Stephen Colbert’s monologue at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday, April 29, 2006
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Before I begin, I’ve been asked to make an announcement. Whoever parked 14 black bulletproof S.U.V.’s out front, could you please move them? They are blocking in 14 other black bulletproof S.U.V.’s and they need to get out.
Wow. Wow, what an honor. The White House correspondents’ (…)

The War’s Liberal Enablers
2 May 2006Accountability is no longer creeping, but racing up on the Bush gang. No, not the shuffling of the decks chairs --- the "transfer" of Karl Rove; Scott McClellan’s Snow job replacement; or even Scooter’s spilling the beans on the deliberate misleading of the Plame Grand Jury. Nope. It’s the big brass Rummyache that’s got the roaches scurrying. If Rummy goes, who would make decisions for the Decider-in-chief?
All this is quite entertaining and offers hope, but it also brings up: where’s the (…) -

IRAN : Stop the war on Iran before it starts! SIGN THE PETITION !
2 May 2006Stop the war on Iran before it starts! Sign online : http://www.stopwaroniran.org/statement.shtml
It is with grave concern that we observe the growing threat of a new U.S. war—this time against the people of Iran.
The media is filled with reports of an alleged nuclear threat posed by Iran and the assumed need for the U.S. to take military action. These reports recall the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" stories issued in the months leading up to the war on Iraq.
In the lead up to the (…) -
Stick it to big oil!
1 May 2006I was just reading about Bee County Texas the other day. It seems the good folks there have finally had enough of the high prices they have been paying for gasoline. They are boycotting Exxon until the price for regular unleaded comes back down to $1.30. The idea is to not buy any gasoline at any Exxon or Mobile stations while supporting the stores with inside business so that the employees will still have a job. The effort they desire to put forward is the best of intentions but is quite (…)

Slapping the Face of Truth...a poem about Bush
1 May 2006Oh, I have slapped the face of truth, prevaricated and deceived like many ancient kings...
Upward I’ve climbed with help from Karl Rove and neocons, and done a hundred things the law does not allow.
Wheeled and dealed and given cushy contracts too,
High perhaps on drugs or booze, without a care,
I’ve lied my foolish head off, expanded ego craftily with hot air.
True, true, my diplomatic moves are few.
I’ve told a million tales with easy grace, and devastated language without a single (…) -
An Easy Viable Way of Taking the Money Out of the Election Process
1 May 2006Well after seeing so many people saying what we can do about all the money spent to be elected, I sat and thought for a few minutes, and came up with this, when any candidate takes office he accepts an oath of office. Why not make each candidate when applying for office, fill out a questionnaire, of their interpretation of the constitution and bill of rights and all subsequent amendments. Sign a form stating that the first time a decision is made by me that deviates from my interpretation, (…)

HUGE DEMO IN NYC : Protesters Give Bush the Finger By Tom Engelhardt
1 May 2006Protesters Give Bush the Finger By Tom Engelhardt, Tomdispatch.com Posted on May 1, 2006, Printed on May 1, 2006 http://www.alternet.org/story/35663/
It’s the perfect day for a march. Sunny, crisp, clear, spring-like. The sort of day that just gives you hope for no reason at all, though my own hopes are not high for New York’s latest antiwar demonstration. I haven’t received a single email about it. Many people I know hadn’t realized it was happening. I fear the outreach has been minimal (…) -
U.S.: More Than 600 Implicated in Detainee Abuse
1 May 2006Two years ago, revelations about the abuse of detainees in U.S. custody at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq shocked people across the world. In response, U.S. government officials condemned the conduct as illegal and assured the world that perpetrators would be held accountable.
Two years later, it has become clear that the problem of torture and other abuse by U.S. personnel abroad was far more pervasive than the Abu Ghraib photos revealed-extending to numerous U.S. detention facilities in (…) -
KATRINA : Don’t come back to New Orleans unless you intend to join the fight for justice!’
1 May 2006Eight months after Katrina: ’Don’t come back to New Orleans unless you intend to join the fight for justice!’
by Bill Quigley Six weeks after Katrina, public housing tenants were evicted from several developments, using storm damage as a pretext. Driving out residents from livable homes made HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson’s prediction of a "whiter New Orleans" a self-fulfilling prophecy. Photo: forestparkresist@gmail.com
