Former oppressor brought from Bolivia to be prosecuted for more than 300 kidnappings
by La Pampa - Open-Publishing - Thursday 29 December 2011
Former military oppressor Luis Eduardo Baraldini, arrested and expelled by the Bolivian authorities, will be prosecuted in the Province of La Pampa, held responsible for more than 300 kidnappings followed by torture, during the military dictatorship, as informed by Télam on Tuesday.
Former Colonel Baraldini was in charge of the 1.4 Subzone of the military regime, and was wanted by Argentine courts since 2003, when he fled to Bolivia, where he lived under false identity.
Baraldini´s arrest in Santa Cruz de la Sierra was announced last Sunday by Security Minister Nilda Garré. After being arrested by the Bolivian authorities, he was handed over to Argentine authorities at the border town of Bermejo, in the Province of Salta, and brought to Buenos Aires.
Several of Baraldini´s former assistants in La Pampa, where he commanded the provincial police, had been sentenced to prison in November 2010 in trials taken ahead in Santa Rosa, the provincial capital.
Federal Prosecutor Marta Odasso, who headed the investigation, said that Baraldini’s capture “is of paramount importance to prosecute the crimes committed in La Pampa”.
Federal Judge Mario Truiputti, Chairman of the Tribunal that prosecuted the La Pampa accused, commented that Baraldini’s arrest was the result of a “long search” with the full cooperation of the Bolivian Government.
