Home > Kate And Wills’ Missed Opportunity
’One may not be terribly amused’ by the publication of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge (formerly Kate Middleton), but in what has been described privately as ’a storm in a B-cup’ by some well-placed Royal observers, I think the Duke and his wife have missed a great opportunity to get Closer to their ’a peoples’.
Upon learning that the intimate photos of Kate, sans top, would appear in a French magazine and instead of threatening legal action and attempting to paint themselves as victims, the Royal couple should have made a public statement along the lines of:
From the Duchess of Cambridge:
"While the photographs taken of William and I were of a private moment that I would not normally have expected to be made public, I believe that a woman’s body is beautiful and that there’s nothing for me to be embarrassed about."
From the Duke of Cambridge:
"I support Catherine’s position on this subject. The photos depict a natural and beautiful moment in our lives and I am proud of my wife’s beauty."
The above statements would not have prevented the publication of the now famous topless photos in Closer magazine, but a joint and disarming statement would have reduced the financial value of subsequent publications and a less combative approach would have bought the Royals considerable support among the people over which they will one day Rule.
In my opinion, few of the Royal couple’s future Subjects and even fewer ’commoners’ around the world see the Duchess as a victim (except perhaps of her own naivety). And there isn’t a tabloid newspaper or gossip magazine editor in the country who wouldn’t have published those photos if they had thought they could have done so without being ostracised, no matter what they say publicly.
In the end, William and Kate will lose this battle. Their planned legal action in France will be publicly debated and may have to expand to Italy and Ireland to be taken seriously and the topless photos and those other more intimate images not yet released will be published, duplicated and repeated ad nauseum as the Royal couple drives the value of the images far beyond their original interest and worth.
Perhaps that’s what they intended all along.
