White House denies lump a radio receiver

By Elisabeth Bumiller

WASHINGTON - What was that bulge in
the back of President Bush’s suit jacket at the first presidential debate in
Miami?
A still photo from television footage of Bush as he debated Democratic
challenger Sen. John Kerry on Sept. 30 in Coral Gables, Fla., appears to show
a small, boxy shape between the president’s shoulder blades.

According to rumors racing across the Internet, the bulge was a radio receiver, transmitting answers from an offstage counselor into a hidden presidential earpiece. The prime suspect was Karl Rove, Bush’s powerful political adviser.

When the online magazine Salon published an article about the rumors on Friday - the day of the second presidential debate, in St. Louis - the speculation reached such a pitch that White House and campaign officials found themselves inundated with calls.

First they said that pictures showing the bulge might have been doctored. But then, when the bulge turned out to be clearly visible in the television footage of the evening, they offered a different explanation.

"There was nothing under his suit jacket," said Nicolle Devenish, the Bush campaign’s communications director. "It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric."

Devenish could not explain why the "rumpling" was in a rectangular shape.

Campaign and White House officials said that the bulge was not from a bulletproof vest; they said Bush was not wearing one.

They said the bulge was definitely not a receiver and declined to discuss it further because they did not want to appear to take seriously what they consider a "wild accusation."

wired.com, is devoted not just to the mysterious bulge at the debate, but to speculation that Bush has worn wires on other occasions as well.

"Some people have been spending too many hours looking at left-wing conspiracy Web sites," Bush campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said. "Did you hear the one about Elvis moderating the third debate?"

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • Are you surprised? I’m not Bush caused a war that didn’t need to happen, killed innocent women and children so I am not surprised he would stoop to being coached by someone else as it was quite apparent he cannot speak off the cuff, he needs papers in front of him that someone else prepared.
Questions asked were skirted around and not answered especially the last one which was so apparent that he could not come up with 3 things he did wrong where everyone else in the world could have come up with several more than the 3 asked by the lady.
Bush should be out as he is not President material. I see a cartoon beside this posting and it says Bush found its Weapons of Mass Destruction. It is a safe locked with an American Flag on the front of it. Wake up people don’t vote for Bush.

  • This is not true. If it were, why should you be suprised? The President is Head of State and represents his Administration and Party. No different than a Teleprompter.

  • It’s bullet-proofing. Of course, it’s not a vest under the jacket, just like they said. If you’re the President of the US, you can doubtlessly get a custom suit jacket that has the bullet-proofing built-in. The weight and bulk of such a thing would also explain the "hump" that Bush seemed to have in his posture as he stood at the podium and the way he seemed to be leaning heavily on the podium. The others thing I noticed were the padding in his shoulders (Enormous. Why should the padding go nearly to the center of his back and past the shoulder blade?) and that his coat seemed to be a little snug, too snug for someone as prepped for appearance as the President of the US for a nationally televised debate. Why would the aforementioned shoulder pads be so visible? How could that pass his handlers without some really good mitigating factor? I’ll bet the coat he wore is nearly a half-inch thick and weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40 pounds.

In short, IMOH, there was nothing *under* the jacket. It was the jacket itself.

Dear God, how paranoid do you have to be to wear that kind of protection in such a setting?

    • there is a reciever that looks exactly like what is on his back. i taped the second debate where he walked around a lot, there is a lot of side views of george bush, it is really obvious that there is a reciever in his right ear. they get good shots of his left ear too, and guess what there is nothing in his left ear, bush is so busted. A friend at work said george would not do that cause he could get in so much trouble for doing that. like you he is in denial of bush and his legacy for lieing, but the truth will come out and you will be so embarrassed for supporting a fake cowboy.

    • The picture featured in Salon shows a clearly delineated small rectangular box. It is not a bullet proof vest. Give me a break. He tried to cheat and couldn’t pull it off. Let’s see how he does tonight on the debate, same format. Listen to what he says: internets? Want some wood? What a small mind in such a high place.

  • please listen to this and ask yourself if you know ANYONE who talks like this
    it is......not normal to....talk like.....this

    • ya, i agree with you. at one point in the debate george says a phrase of 5 words, most people say phrases fluently because a phrase is how our minds think in. and we speak in phrases.
george said 4 of the words in the phrase, then paused then said the last word of the phrase.
which indicates he was being read to by some one nearby. this also explains why he has so many bloopers. he is a puppet of rove

  • I am an engineer with experience in CDMA and cellular technology. But you don’t have to be one to see that nowadays you don’t need a backpack to hide a receiver. That’s WW2 technology. You guys check out the latest cellphones and wireless headphones, earphones etc. Now, our spies have gadgets that fit neatly in your ear with no visible parts.

  • i taped both debates and as i watched them over to see if i could see a object in bushes ear. sure enough i saw a object in bushes right ear on the second debate. they took a lot of side views of bushes head. even with my naked eye i could see a small orange object in his ear.
It was obvious his right ear had a ear reciever and his left ear did not.
i am attention deficit and do not remember short long sentences well. bush reminded me of me as if i was trying to say what someone was telling me to say in my ear. he would say a phrase and just stop before finishing the phrase and then after a pause he would finish the phrase even if it was only one word.
his speech was usually a short sentences, probably thats all he could remember that was told to him over the radio.

  • Why are you not reporting the wiring of the President’s tie during the second debate?

The wire behind Bush’s tie in the second debate is definitely there, and he’s tucking it in just after saying "real time messages."

I found a clip of the debate on MSNBC.COM, which shows it clearly.

    Go to:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6191353/

On the right, there’s a video section that says "LIVE VIDEO". Underneath it you can navigate forward by clicking the arrow to the right. Click it till you get to number 6: "Is Draft Possible?" Then click the "Launch" button.

He will talk for about a minute. When he gets to this point, watch very closely:

"For instance, we’re flying unmanned vehicles that can send real-time messages back to stations in the United States. That saves manpower, and it saves equipment."

He tucks the wire in just after saying "real-time messages."

It must have been a subconscious reaction after saying the words "real-time messages."

The President is clearly cheating in these debates. It’s something worthy of investigation.

    • It’s a spine! Something John Kerry and Many Liberals wouldn’t recognize anyway...

    • Yeah right, a spine. Let’s not be stupid about this. Please.

    • Oh please. It’s evident you’re not used to wearing a suit and tie. The President is simply adjusting his tie, as the bottom tends to get pulled to the side when you lift up your arm (such as when you’re talking and doing a lot of arm movements) and it pulls the front of the suit to the side.

Get a job in the corporate world and you’ll experience this phenomenon for yourself. Employer-provided uniforms don’t have the same kind of nuisances associated with them - unless you count trying to put a perfect curve in the baseball cap to match the pretty gold "M" arches on the front.

    • Me being stupid.. Do you really think John Kerry’s War Room would let the president leave that stage without thinking of all this B.S. you conspiricy wacks think up. If it were true, Kerry’s people would have real proof, Crisp Photos, Explanations, Etc. and we would all be seeing multi-million dollar ads right now about it. Surely you saw all the photo flashes that went off in the presidents directlion. If they had real evidence, it would be the key to the election, So you tell me why they havn’t exploited it? Because the evidence is not there! At least I can prove there’s a spine under that coat.

  • Are we ignorant. Do you not think in this era of being able to put a transmitter/receiver on a fingertip that they would use an apparatus that size. If they are going to use a radio device which requires an auditory interface (ear piece) the president could probably find an all in one minature device which could go virtually unnoticed in his ear.

If he was not wearing a flack jacket and usually does, maybe he was wearing a shirt which was cut for wearing such, which may have folded over due to excess material thus causing the bulge.

As far as the wrong war, I would venture to say that if you were to ask those who have gone before us as they were heading feet first into Mr. Hussain’s plastic shredder, do you think this is the wrong war. I have family over in Iraq and they are proud to be there. This is a job they care and believe in because they care about our country. To think that if you get Osama it will be the end is tunnel vision. We may not of found WMD’s as of yet in Iraq and may never, Hussains government was an enabler and conduit for terrorism.

One of the domestic policies which Kerry proposes and Clinton did the same was to raise the minimum wage. The minimum wage is what it is a starting point. But everytime you raise the minimum wage it is directly proportional to the cost of living. I have worked 22 years to get the wage I do today, everytime the minimum wage is raised, what I have worked for is reduced, my employer cannot afford to raise my wage proportionally so it devalues my effort. It also narrows the middle class. I entered the work force making minimum wage. I have also started a business and with a higher minimum wage, It cost more to staff the business which leaves me with three options, 1) hire fewer personnel, overwork them and compromise quality. 2) Raise prices to cover the service which attributes to inflation in the cost of living 3) close the doors. Wait there is a fourth option, get a government job. So again, explain the benefit.

Good luck and may god bless us all.

  • If you look closely at his pants, there’s also a bulge there. It’s called nuts, something else Kerry does not have.

  • a loose seam which causes a jacket to slightly move during sudden arm movements doesn’t cause a cdplayer shape to form. its obviously an artificial heart

    • i agree, it must be a fake heart placed on his back. theyre making them nowadays, so that you don’t need surgery to replace a broken heart

  • I have believed this for some time, ever since I heard Bush make an inadvertent comment "I can’t hear you" at a press conference in the Rose Garden. I do not remember the date. It was not in response to a question but in the middle of his answer, after one of his characteristic pauses.

  • Salon.com has come out with another story with a technical expert who says that Bush WAS wired.

    http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2004/10/13/transmitter/index.html

Also, there are two photos at the link, one of Bush during the debate and one of him in his truck in his ranch at Crawford, Texas.

Now, you tell me how the SAME "wrinkle" in the form of a rectangular bump shows up on the same man (Bush), on TWO different days, with one day in a suit, and another in a regular shirt.

Let’s stop giving Bush the benefit of the doubt, and start believing our eyes. The expert’s explanation makes sense...Bush wears a communication device for Secret Service protection, and it’s obvious he was wearing some device at the debate.

If he was, he cheated, plain and simple! Now what are the skeptics going to say...that the same wrinkle happened on two different days, with two sets of different clothing? People get real...yes, your President Bush is a dimwit who gets help from his aides via an earpiece. That’s why he looked lost in the first debate...because he was trying to stammer through his answers while an aide of his was confusing him through the earpiece. Haven’t you had the same problem when trying to speak to someone while on the phone with someone else?

  • I said it first to my family that Pres. Bush hesitated then answered each question like he was getting the answers from somebody else because he is not smart enough to answer them on his own!
