Tell CNN’s Anderson Cooper to Keep Reporting the Truth

  My husband and I are so grateful for people like Anderson Cooper. Please keep reporting the truth. We live about 50 miles north of Seattle, Washington and are concerned & upset over several of the issues that Anderson has helped to bring to light.

  1. The Mayor of New Orleans seems to be dodging the bullet as far as accountability and responsibility goes. There was no planning in advance for the people to have even the fundimentals, such as water, Flashlights, or rations of any kind. The police protections they needed was overlooked. It seems that the blame is being shifted totally to the Federal level. But the truth is the initiation of planning and the cry for help was as bad as the rush to get there. There is no doubt that Brown was the wrong man for the job on the Federal level but the mayor of New Orleans is just a responsible for lives when it comes to the local level.
  Living in the Northern Puget Sound area of the West Coast we loose our power several times a year due to storms and wind. We do have a generator for power but having a well, so we loose water within an hour. That is our first call to duty when setting up our home for this situation. That is the most basic need in life. A no-brainer in our opinion. Shame on the Mayor of New Orleans.
  We see the other mayors of each community out helping, hands on with the recovery. We have never seen this mayor do anything but dodge the press and hide.

  2. We believe that the level of recovery effort going on now is 99% due to the exposure coming from CNN, and fear of negative publicity in the Political battle field. There is one thing that has not come up yet and that is the impact to the rest of the US especially with jobs that are Federally funded in some way, Such as the Super Fund Clean up sites. We have friends and relatives working in two of these areas. The Hanford Reserve in The Tri-Cities, Washington area is being cut to give the money to the people in the Katrina destruction Zone. The employee’s have been given notice that the job maybe shut down for 2 years so that sizemic testing can be conduted. This is another ploy to cover up the lack of planning and lack of funds available due to the Astrinomical Amount of money that is being poured into Iraq and other places outside of this country. The Hanford Neuclear Reserve is the most contaminated site in the US and since 1990 money has been poured into this area planning for the cleanup. At present over 3000 people have been laid off and All the equipment that was bought and paid for is sitting idle. The original estimate was that it would take until 2027 to complete the clean up and cost was in the 10’s of Billins of dollars. Much money has been spent to gear up and about 4 years ago work started. To date it is still a hole the government is throwing money into and still clean up is at a stale mate.
  We saw a satelite view shot in infrared showing the contamination going down the Columbia River to the Ocean and then on. There is a bight red glow that shows the radioactive contamination from Hanford at the Reserve to the Ocean that is frightening. It is seeping out of the ground and into the river more everyday. Bechtel Corp is the Company that is in charge of the cleanup and they were also the company that tried to drive a sheet pile wall in the 90’s to stop the seepage and failed. The Basalt under the crust of earth is too hard and makes a great highway for the radioactive waiste to travel on. The ground is so contaminated that tumble weeds, insects and evern rabbits are infected. Contamination has been spread by common flies that were being transported by the garbage trucks. Several Years ago, my husband and I fished the Hanford reach area and regularly caught Chinook salmon from 50 to 60 pounds. The Washington State Fish and Wildlife came out with a statement asking fishermen and women not to eat more than 2 fish a year, because of the contamination found in them at that time. It is by far worse now. So my question is which disaster can we afford to ignore.
  3. Also Libby, Montana is a Super Fund clean up site. The clean up is as screwed up as Hanford. Everytime the Government needs money for another crisis these areas take a hit. The Government is spending money faster than they can print it and no hopes of stoping. I don’t know what the answer is but it is not to rebuild Iraq and let the last remaining Wild Chinook Salmon spawning bed die and contaminate the World with a waiste that will never die. We are heading down a road that I am not sure there is a turn-around on.
  Please keep up the very much needed reporting and dont let them stop you. There are so many things going on that it is hard to keep up with the blunders.

  The political consequences are equally enormous. The inadequacy and bankruptcy of the ugly capitalistic system has been exposed dramatically.

  Capitalism can only destroy and is not meant to fulfill human needs.

  The criminal Bush administration is directly responsible for the disaster. A few months before the hurricane the administration transferred long sought-for funds from raising the levee top around New Orleans to the bottomless account for destruction of Iraq.

  The capitalistic answer to the cry for help from the hundreds of thousands of black victims was to change the task of the troops from aiding the distressed to killing those who tried to survive by emptying the abandoned stores.

  Katrina has changed the whole geopolitical picture. Together with the ridiculous defeat in Iraq the inability of the so-called superpower and the need for foreign aid to cope with a domestic disaster has significantly diminished its power to intimidate and cow rest of the world.

  The superpower obviously is not so super as it wants us to believe.

  I have to agree. Each night I would view CNN/Anderson Cooper to learn more about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Cooper’s reporting was honest. He reported the devastion from "ground zero". His passion, dedication, and relentless dedication to report the real news was incredible. I had to wonder during his coverage of this tragic story, does he ever sleep?

  His dedication and sense to report the honest news of the hurricane was visible in all of his stories. The one that comes to mind most is when he was in small boat traveling through the flooded areas of New Orleans. Anderson was describing the pollutants, bacteria in the water due to the chemicals etc.... from the floods. At one point some of the water splashed into his mouth. This seemed to concern him, but he continued to report the news. I think there were many times during this assignment , Cooper was a human being first. His concern and effort for saving people, animals while reporting the news was refreshing and showed he is truly a humanitarian before anything else!
