The healthcare debate just keeps spinning out of control, death panels and let’s kill off granny movements bumbling, stumbling with overweight, jackboot wannbes. Watch them pretending outrage while keeping one eye on the director.
I was watching the video of the St. Louis town hall scuffle and one man seems to always be on the edge of the camera shot. When he looks at the camera the camera moves forward almost like he was giving instructions. But when you hire amateurs (…)

Woodstock, Handmade

It is funny how sometimes you start out to write one story and end up writing another. I have been doing research on Woodstock and as the old joke goes, “If you remember it, you weren’t there.”
I remember it well enough and I wasn’t there, but as I watched the You Tube videos I began to remember details long forgotten, plus some things that I’ve learned since. I was watching a video of the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 1969, playing "Honky Tonk Woman." Yes, I know the (…) -

“I came upon a child of god He was walking along the road And I asked him, where are you going And this he told me I’m going on down to Yasgur’s farm I’m going to join in a rock ’n roll band I’m going to camp out on the land I’m going to try an get my soul free”
How can you describe the fires of Vesuvius or a sunny day in a Roman market square? History leaves us only pale shadows and dirty windows of the past to peek into. Even with celluloid how can it be described? (…) -
Raising Baby Bubba

There is a video making the rounds on the Internet of a woman dragging her child on a leash through a Verizon store. There was scads of outrage and the mother was charged with a felony. Well, Dr. Obvious says that child abuse emanates from poor parenting skills.
When my wife was pregnant with our first child, another couple dropped by to congratulate us. As we chatted the husband said, “Enjoy those house plants while you can!”
“Why is that?" I asked.
“Oh, the baby (…) -
How Far Must Johnny March ?

Lost in the debate over health care and in between Sarah Palin’s speeches and right about the time the thriller stopped thrilling was Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announcing a “Temporary” expansion of the Army by 22,000 men. This temporary expansion is designed to take the strain off the Army. The Army has been growing all along and had reached 547,000 before this latest announcement. Some don’t think that 22,000 are enough; Senator Joe Lieberman issued a position (…) -
The Gate Keepers of Death

There are several reasons that I believe we won’t get adequate healthcare reform. The first reason is that we don’t really deserve it. We let the political class ride unicycles and juggle bowling pins, anything to amuse the cows. Then we let the media and special interest lobbying groups tell us what’s good for us and what’s bad for us. We rail against what we don’t like and mumble about what we do want, and since the bulk of us are healthy it is just a quiet murmur (…) -

I write about homelessness and I get answers like, “So, are you for or against Obama’s stimulus?” Recently I read an article that was highly rated entitled “Now is the Time to Give Up on the President.” The author, using snark and sarcasm, set up straw men and then proceeded to knock them all down, arguing that it is much too soon to criticize this president. The underlying theme was, however, that to criticize the President was to be disloyal and in doing so was (…) -
Not Discouraged, Abandoned

Last month the number of Americans who lost their jobs was revised down to 467,000, just under a half a million. The total number of newly unemployed now stands at 14.7 million people. That number was revised downward 358,000 by a government technique used to classify those unemployed for more than twelve months as discouraged workers.
I am one of those workers, but I do not consider myself a discouraged worker as much as an abandoned worker. I have four resumes, (…) -
GM’s Free Ride

A free ride on your dime, that is. Let us dispense with all talk of welfare cheats and lazy, good for nothings that don’t want to work until we deal with the king of welfare cheats, the king of free rides, and the king of government handout checks.
Under the terms of the government sponsored bankruptcy deal, GM has been able to void worker contracts for wages and benefits, shed itself of the health insurance concerns, permanently eliminated 21,000 American jobs and (…) -
Coming Soon, to a Life Near You

The other day I went with my son to the metal salvage yard. We had been cleaning up the shop and had two or three engine blocks plus the usual amalgamation of sheet metal. We pulled into the yard to wait in line for the weigh-in scale and in front of us was a large construction truck loaded down with scaffolding. Scaffolding on its way to the crusher and then to be melted down because that construction company saw no future need in owning scaffolding as a tool of its (…)
