History moves in fits and starts, traveling stealthily until suddenly it erupts like a volcano and something new is born. Like the pangs of birth, we can see it coming and even more we can feel its presence. After the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Bush vs. Gore, I thought that never in my life I would ever live to see a worse decision than the Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday.
The way in which the media has handled the news of this latest decision is case in (…)

If I Met Poppy in a Pizza Parlor
22 January 2010 par (Open-Publishing)
(For links see here.)
When I heard about the guy that ran into "Poppy" (George H.W.) Bush in a pizza place in Houston, cussed him out and posted a video about it on YouTube, of course I had to watch it. (Click here fast; it seems to be disappearing.) The names turned out to be "murderous, Zionist piece of s*," without the asterisk.
Mulling this over carefully, especially having just finished Russ Baker’s exhaustive (and exhausting) Family of Secrets, I wouldn’t call the man a Zionist. I (…) -
My Country ’tis of thee—Corporatocracy! Of Thee I Sing
22 January 2010 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsI know, I know. I’ve seen the blogosphere screeching about the Death of Democracy now that the Supreme Court has rolled back restrictions on corporate donations to political campaigns. Whiners. Haven’t you all stopped for even a moment to think how this might benefit humanity? Sure, sure, we’re all aware of the downside, but would it kill us to think positive for a change?
I mean, let’s face it: corporations have controlled the agenda since the Mayflower Compact duped those non-puritan (…) -
Why Martha Lost
19 January 2010 par (Open-Publishing)
While US Democrats are shocked at the surprising vulnerablity of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat—the Liberal Lion of the Senate—US observer Daniel Patrick Welch, who lives in and writes from Kennedy’s home state, is underwhelmed. Democrats have foolishly ceded the populist impulse to the right, and are now reaping what they have sown.

PARDON JACK JOHNSON
5 January 2010 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsOn the surface, it appeared to be a textbook example of a “no-brainer.” In July of 2009 both Houses of Congress passed a resolution urging Barack Obama, America’s first African-American president and symbol of racial progress, to pardon Jack Johnson, America’s first African-American heavyweight boxing champion and symbol of racial injustice.
In 1908 Johnson won the championship by defeating Tommy Burns, and soon used his celebrity status to condemn the racial mores of his day. This (…) -

President Obama,
Two events occurred at the end of 2009 that called me attention:
First: New sentences given to Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino by the Miami Federal Court.
Second: Your Nobel Prize award in Oslo.
Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino are three of the five Cubans who are inhumanely detained in your (…) -
YouTube video claiming attack on Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi was staged is hit on Internet (video)
22 December 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By Ethan Sacks
A video suggesting that the attack on Silvio Berlusconi was staged has hit the Internet with enough force to be an embarrassing blow to the wounded Italian premier. An eight-minute YouTube video in Italian — "Was the attack on Berlusconi a montage?" and consisting of stills and video clips from the Milan incident — notched 500,000 hits in the first few hours after it was posted, London’s Daily Mail reported. Berlusconi was hospitalized with a broken nose, two broken (…)
