You’re kidding, right? That’s it?

After holding Brits in our extralegal dungeons for two years, one day we just let ’em go?

We’ve still got more than 600 people imprisoned in our Halliburton-built prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where for more than two years we’ve been interrogating them, denying them lawyers, denying them any kind of judicial review, hinting quite bluntly that they could all remain in limbo like this forever, and trying to put a brave face on all of the suicide attempts.

And every now and then, without comment, we bundle a few of them onto
international flights and dump them out on a street somewhere — and
suddenly it turns out that this dangerous menace was just a bewildered Kabul taxi driver, or a 10-year-old.

What the heck is that about?

I mean, if the argument is that these people are too horrifically dangerous to ever risk granting them access to the American judicial system, how can you just up and cut them loose?

And if they’re not dangerous — well, how can you hold a man in a Kafkaesque jail for two years, slapping him around, denying him sleep, asking him randomly desperate (and therefore asinine) questions like " Do you know Mullah Omar?"; and then one day open the door, shake his hand and wave goodbye, without even the slightest blush of shame, the most sheepish of apologies?

One of the first of five Britons released this week from Gitmo was one Jamal al Harith of Manchester, a website designer and a father of three.

"After a while, we stopped asking for human rights — we wanted animal rights," Harith told Britain’s Daily Mirror. "In Camp X-Ray my cage was right next to a kennel housing an Alsatian dog. He had a wooden house with air conditioning and green grass to exercise on.

"I said to the guards, ’I want his rights’ and they replied, "That dog is a member of the US army’."

This man, Harith, wasn’t held but a few hours by British police and security services before they had shrugged and let him go free. There’s no case,
apparently.

And now, of course, these and other detainees are gearing up to sue the
pants off of the United States government. Chalk it up as one more bill that
the Bush-Cheney team will leave us to pay for long after they’re gone.

  • Why is is so hard for Whitey to admit that s/he is against Islam and Muslims?

Oh, I know many of us say we are for freedom and for equality and other falsehoods, but why can we not say verbally the viseral thought? I know that subconscous thoughts about "those people" is always there. How many times during the day I meet Indian/Pakistani Muslims at work, during meetings, during lunch, walking in the corridors and the though of how "different" they are... And yet, I don’t have balls enough to even try to understand why I think this...

Yet, when asked, or when a situation arises, I am ready to verbalize all the cliches about how equal we are here and the wars are not against Islam/Muslims, etc., etc.

Anyone? Anyone else feel a little like this and want to vent?

    • Look, it aint just"whitey", it is the wealthy against the poor. People have no problems adapting to foreigners or their customs once they take the time to spend an hour with them, people understand each other, we are not the problem. the problem lies within the governments of the world and the people who control them. this is where the real terror eminates from

    • No you are wrong... It is not rich versus poor in this case. (While "rich" versus "poor" may play a role in a comprehensive or otherwise some other way).

I can assure you that I nor my team members of IT professionals are rich. I can also assure you that the church that I attend and its members are not rich. If anything, the people in the church are less well off due to age/retirement, and other professions, like car mechanics, bicklayers and an auctioneer. All of which are highly against Arabs and Muslims. Back after nine eleven, we invited a Muslim to come and talk to us; God what a mess. For weeks after the topic was this man and how Muslims and Arabs are born wicked and that they want to die.

All the while when he was there for the hour long talk and a reception afterwards everyone was walking on eggs... Some asked insulting and lame questions like how he liked America...

What you are saying, in effect give weight to my argument. You are deflecting it onto another part of society — that of the government. But ask yourself where did the members of the government come from, but from the people like you and me. And even if the government says things, ask yourself why we accept that negative description?

I know it happens with me... And I see it happenning with my peers. And I wonder why it is that I appear to be admitting this, whereas no one else around me does so. Sometimes I see this (verbal admission of hating Musims/Arabs) as my weakness; that I am letting down my Whitey American brothers and sisters.

You may deny in print what I am saying... But, really look into yourself... As I have — We Whitey Americans really detest these peoples. Try to imagine what you felt when you (if ever) have seen a White woman in company of a non-White man.

Think of that moment and recall the talk that makes it super easy for us to accept any negative thing said about these people.

It is not a rich versus poor issue. It is Whitey verus Muslims/Arabs issue.

    • well sounds like you are at least trying to be honest with yourself , which is a good start, but I have met many olive , brown , yellow and red skinned people that i would much rather spend time and thoughts with than many bigoted whites who cannot seperate skin color from reality of whats inside that person. people are for the most part good, with the exceptions of government leaders around the world, i dont think we would ever see terror from people if we had no governments

    • I wouldn’t know about anything close to government leaders, etc.

But I will tell you, (1) I will take what you say about yourself at print value and (2) I may be trying to be honest with myself but believe me, there are no other Whitey American that I know who is. Not at work. Not on the train. Not in my dating scene. Not at church. No where I have gone to over the last four years. Oh, not on vacation.

As I look further in my past and my daily encounters, I find the biased attitudes were there before nine eleven. And I find that why I detest the blacks and latino are part of the same spectrum of hate in me and all the other Whitey Americans I know. (Simply, that they are not White).

Anyway I do no see any change in Whitey attitude — we will be in this war for the next 900 years if not more. We will buy into all the negative and condensending things said about Muslims and Arabs and as a Whitey, I will get spooked and I will lash out with weapons and have my boys kill.

I see this reaction in me as clear as day — and I see it in all my firneds. It’s appears that I am the only one who expresses it,

    • people will only allow to be pushed around for so long, even whitey as you say, before they truely dissent with more than words. bush and his gang of perverted rapists and terrorists aka the bush admin, the congress and senate both sides of the aisles are all recognizable faces, there are less than 100000 people we are talking about who control 95% of everything, it want be that hard when it starts because , these 100000 have had everything in their lives handed to them, and when the shit hits the fan it shreds and people who have had things done for them their whole lives will be helpless

    • Be that as it may.

We seem to be drifting a little off topic and the issue is scrolling off the primary screen... In my experience, once it gets off the first screen folks stop reading/responding to the articles...

Well, whether its 10 or 100,000 people who are controling is not really the issue; Whitey America is beyond hope — in education, self-respect, respect of other peoples and cultures, respect for value of humankind/animal-kind/plant-kind... It is going to be this way until as such time as the Divine Hand put a stop to it... (Perhaps, your creator/nature/or chance, what ever you believe... puts a stop to it...)

Mark my words, it does not matter whether it is Bush or Clinton or Kennedy, Whitey is Whitey... Check out what Clinton was doing to Iraq or what JFK did to S. Vietnam’s president when Diem went ever so slightly made a peace offer to the N. Vietnamese... (Kennedy had Diem assassinated..)

BTW, I don’t believe it will hit the fan; the poweres that be are better than letting that happen... And if it did, it is easy to get Whitey looking at the next boogyman to get his mind off the fan and the fertilizer...

      Whitey will never change.

    • "Why is is so hard for Whitey to admit that s/he is against Islam and Muslims?"

caution : we will erase messages with caractere defamatory, abusive, xenophobe, sexist, the threats, politic and commercial advertising...

      Start erasing.

      Whitey.

    • I’m not getting this discussion. As a white woman, I suppose it’s why I rarely date white men anymore. Dark-skinned men know what discrimination looks like (as do I as a woman), and they know what’s going on politically and culturally, unlike most white men. They treat me better, and I like their looks. And they know to be outraged by a child being held for two years in a prison. They are close to humanity. Has white supremist patriarchy blinded white men to that part of themselves?

    • Me is new here.
      Who/what exactly is "Whitney"?

    • Agree, with most of the posts, people are turned against other people whether its religion , black or white, or even which football team you support.
      Theres no denying it’s happening.

Don’t forget the world was polarized 15 years ago, between the ideologies of capitalism and communism.
Capitalism won. Mainly by enticing the population they need to ’own’ and buy things. Capitalism rules brutally by dividing people, even better by getting people to fight amongst themselves. People fighting amongst themselves are easy to dominate, by the few at the top, and the fans that fuel the conflicts are waved.

Why Guantanamo? This is enabled by the governments monopoly over violence. It is only legitimate when exercised by their lackeys.

    • This IS a war against Militan Islam. America (and to a lesser extent, Britain) welcomes people from every background to its shores. Arabs and Muslims have assimilated well in the US but not so well here in Britain and other European nations. America is familiar with Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hidus, Zoroaster and every faith. They live and work in the US and are happy to have been welcomed. Militant islamists, on the other hand, wish to end the culture of the west. No solution except for the end of Israel and to capitalism, democracy, consumerism, freedom, etc will suffice. Some of these people are willing to end their life, even if the remote chance of killing or even hurting ONE Jew exists. Terrorism has existed since the beginning of civilization but EXTREME attacks against Americans and American interest over the last 30 years have culminated in the ultimate response to finally try and put an end to this trend. Arabs and Muslims are respected. Militant Islamists and Militant Islams itself are the targets of this.

    • Yeah, there is ’militant’ Islam just as there is militant monetrism. The ’militant’ Islam isn’t as big, or as large a majority,as the media would have us believe. It serves their interests to show that so we assume they’re all like that.
The root of the problem is in power being in the hands of a few. Whether its Tony Blair or Sheik Al whatsisname. Yet the irony is both talk the talk of absolute right. ’’You’re either with us or against us’’, or the ’’West is all bad’’. Both are childish, and deny that we as human beings have the ability to rationalise.
Agree with the woman poster that the media is doing a good job of stereotyping Islam as the metophorical black man of 1950’s USA, whipping up fear. -even though I consider islam ridiculous.

    • You have got to be kidding me! When you mention that you invited someone to your church, that explains alot right there. You and all the moral majority types manufacture fear for your gain.
Also- do I have a problem with mixed-race couples? Not at all! That’s good ol’ Christian tolerance and understanding for ya!

    • You feel this way because you have been conditioned by Hollywood, television, the media, and those State-sponsored cloning machines called "schools." You are becoming aware of your conditioning. Read Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. Watch "Loose Change" [search engine].

    • Dude, you are a racist, plain and simple. You are naive to think that all white people are racist, I am white, yet some of myt best friends are black, latino and muslim. How dare you think you speak for everybody with your racist commentary? It is not a matter of being honest with oneself, I always have been honest. These people are my brothers, more than white racists like you. Perhaps you are a bigot, and that is good you can admit it, but do not assume all white americans are like you. Im truly sorry if that has been your experience. I agree that governments create these conflicts, not because they are racist because they use the old divide and conquer methods. Keep the stupid populace ignorant and suspicious of each other while you steal their money, their liberty and their souls. Sorry man, I dont think we are all like you, no matter how you might try and ease your racist concious.

    • No!!! Capitalism did NOT win! The Soviet Union was NOT Communist except in name alone. Was the production controlled by the workers? No, it was controlled by the government. In short, the Soviet economy was the end product of unchecked capitalism—a la the robber barons of the late century. The American economy, by contrast, contains a LOT of Socialist concepts, like rules against monopolies and other forms of unfair competition, labor unions, etc. Things that level the playing field so that competition can ensue, allowing higher quality products at more reasonable prices, with relatively happy workers. For a better explanation, check out NelsonLeith.com and look at the right side of the screen for the essay "The Free Market Cannot Be ’Capitalist.’" (Sorry, cannot link directly to the essay itself.)

    • wat (im new my name is maria)

  • The link to the article at the Nation does not work.

I look at the articles in the outrage blog where the link points to and nothing there either.

    http://www.thenation.com/blogs/outrage

Where is the source, or has it disappeared?

  • Nice report, thanks - but where is the story about the 10-year-old boy held at Gitmo?

    Boris.

  • Militant Islam?

You mean like the CIA trained asset called Al-qaeda? The guys who fought the soviet army with the blessing of the United states?

Or are you talking about MEK, the new version of Al-qaeda helping to win the freedom in Iran by terrorizing?

Oh wait, your talking about those pesky terrorists that didn’t destroy the statue of liberty, a symbol of liberty and freedom, they destroyed financial centers and military establisments. Sounds like an attack on the military industrial complex, not the American people or freedom.

You would think the statue of liberty, all by it’s lonesome, would of been a much easier target.

Perhaps your speaking of those craaaaaazy muslims that held candle light vigils for the victims of S11...in Tehran.

Imagine if those militant christian fundamentalists wanted to destroy those militant muslim fundamentalists...I bet those leaders in those wacky muslim countries could say something like this:

"Those militant christians want to take away our Islamic way of life, look at what they did to secular Iraq, you don’t want the Americans to come here and do the same do you?????"

The only people who benefit from war are those who make the profits, like me. The rest is noise.
But please don’t stop on my account, the longer you do it, the more I make....$CHA-CHING$

The Images below are from a peaceful candlelight vigil on the streets of Tehran, Iran. (September 18th, 2001) The pariticipants lit candles, mourned, and prayed to showed their grief over the loss of innocent life in the tragedies of Sept. 11th.

    • Exactly, where were these pictures on CNN, BBC, etc.? All they showed of the Muslim world after 9/11 were a few misguided teenagers ’celebrating’.

Now they’re telling us the Shia v Sunni battles in Iraq are instigated by ’rogue’ Sunni elements.
      Yeah, right.

    • Divide and conquer. The perfect diversion. Insted of actually trying to get to the bottom of these issues we instead fight amongst ourselves. You must realise that this plan is so perfect. We actually end up ’policing’ ourselves. Wake up and smell the roses. This planet is ruled by the Illuminati and your wonderful president Bush and Cheney have become almost completely possesed by Reptilian entities. Do your research if you want to wake up before it’s too late.

    • The plan is nearing completion, 220.178. Wait, wait. Catastrophe awaits on us all. We must learn to ride even the most monstrous of waves out to their completion, until they crashingly bottom out. And we must learn quickly, before the deep plunge.

Divide and conquer works this way; misinformation, lies, twisted half-truths are given to one side, and the opposite information, often just as inaccurate as the first, is fed to the other side. Result: Since neither side bothers to make a critical analysis on the information they have obtained, such as finding out about its veracity, asking crucial questions such as ’is the information logically consistent with most of what we know of the real world?’ or ’who has the most to gain from the course of action advocated by this argument?’ questions that the majority of us don’t have trouble asking when we are in a business meeting, but apparently do when discussing far more serious matters, such as the fate of the world; since no one bothers to ask critical questions such as these, all that remains as possible courses of action for most blogsters are the ridiculous name calling tactics, insults, unfunny one-liners, and out & out rude behavior found rampant and unchecked in most ’political’ blog-holes. Most of these blogsters exhibit through their writing behavior most of us would never even think of doing in public, out in the real world, for fear of having our noses broken our being shot.

This is the major reason why I like to respond to comments posted on blogs long after the article has been published. Most blog writers rarely if ever go back to an old article to see if anyone else has posted a response to their often uncivilized & rancid comments.
The Blog-universe is a virtual wasteland of vicious comments and postings, a giant desert of recriminations and lambastings, never to be visited again by their writers after only a week or two of their verbal jousts. I sometimes feel like a large bird of prey when I go back to a very old posting, with a whole world to feast on, with hardly a predator in sight. I have no qualms when I dive into an attack, since most of my prey are barbarically ignorant and incredibly stupid writers one would never wish meeting in the real world. And to drive another important point home; just because an article is more than 2 or 3 weeks old doesn’t mean that it no longer is topical or valid. I have found many two or three year old articles that are more informative and insightful than the majority of the articles I’ve read in the last 3 weeks. And to top it all off, I have the last word, at least so far, 100% of the time. Winner, winner, gets chicken dinner.
But I digress, which is of course, my prerogative.
How to disable this method of attack, this ancient tactic of divide and conquer, older by the way, than Caesar, a tactic that remains a favorite with all those who wield power? We must learn to use your own intellect, not just in school or at our jobs, but even more importantly applying this gift to vital issues that are affecting our world, relying on our own powerful minds to reason and work things out. We must do your own homework, find out more about other cultures, find out more about ourselves, learn to revel in our wonder and curiosity about the miraculous nature of existence itself. We are living in a time where a great deal of knowledge and information is at our fingertips, we no longer have any excuses not to be the best human beings we can possibly be, not here in America.
Our ancestors did not have any of the information technologies that most Americans have at their disposal. To be an ignorant American in the early 21st Century is to be an intellectually lazy American, a person who ultimately does not deserve to have freedom, security nor prosperity. To be an intellectually lazy American is to be a pawn for those in power. People who live in fear through their own ignorance are the most susceptible to the divide and conquer tactic. People who live in fear through their own lack of curiosity are the most gullible and therefore the most easily controlled by entities more powerful than they. To be free, one must be able to think clearly & quickly, without support if need be. To be free one must learn to be guided by certainty, logic, and the truth, one’s own moral code, and not by individuals, especially if those individuals have displayed logical inconsistencies, lack of honesty and lack of integrity in their past. You can have all the money and power in the world, but if in the final analysis, if you cannot think independently on your own, you are no freer than the poor wretches in Guantanamo Bay. Your prison may be far more pleasant, but pretty prisons are still prisons, since someone other than yourself holds the key to your destiny.
