8 US Soldiers Among 17 Killed In Fresh Iraq Violence

by Open-Publishing - Wednesday 23 June 2004

Eight American soldiers were among 17 people killed in fresh violence in Iraq during the past 24 hours.

Four US service members were shot dead west of Baghdad. A videotape delivered to Associated Press Television News showed four Americans in uniform lying dead in what appeared to be a walled compound in Ramadi, 100 kilometres west of Baghdad.

One of the Americans was slumped in the corner of the wall. The bodies had no flak vests, mandatory for US troops operating in contested areas, and at least one was missing a boot. One fieldpack was left open next to a body as if the attackers had looted the dead before fleeing.

Confirming the killings, Brig Gen Mark Kimmitt, coalition deputy operations chief, said that a US quick reaction force found the bodies after the troops failed to report to their headquarters as required.

In another incident, four US Marines were killed in action in Al-Anbar province, the US military said. "Four US Marines assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force were killed on the 21st of June in the Al-Anbar province conducting security and stability operations," a spokesman said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose to five in a roadside bomb blast in the morning in the town of Gayara near Mosul. "Another Iraqi citizen has died as result of an attack on a convoy today, bringing to five the total number of Iraqis who were killed in that attack," the US military said in a statement.

Earlier the 2nd Infantry Division, based in Mosul, reported four Iraqi citizens were killed at 9:35 am when a roadside bomb exploded on their convoy.

About 50 masked Iraqi insurgents blew up a police station south of Baghdad, a US general said. "Approximately 50 armed insurgents wearing black masks dismounted their vehicle by the Iraqi police station in Djor Askar," said Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt. "The attackers placed explosives inside the building and then destroyed the structure," he said.
