Anti-war Coalition’s Right to March on Democratic National Convention Affirmed in Court
by Open-Publishing - Monday 26 July 2004Rally at Boston Common Parade Grounds 12 Noon
Followed by a March on the Democratic National Convention
In a Federal Court ruling on Thursday, the City of Boston
was ordered to issue a permit to the Coalition to Protest
the DNC for a march on Causeway St., past the Fleet
Center, site of the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
In the ruling, the Federal Judge Douglas P. Woodlock
stated that there was a vital "symbolic importance to
marching to the site of the DNC."
"The Coalition has prevailed. We will have a legal and
permitted march in front of the site of the DNC. People
from all over the country are coming by bus, car, plane,
and train to show their opposition to the policies of the
Democratic Party," said Sue Kelly, Secretary-Treasurer of
Local 334 Office and Professional Employees International
Union (AFL-CIO). "Anti-war activists, unionists,
community organizers, clergy, veterans, and many others
opposed to war and racism will be marching with us on
Sunday."
Larry Holmes, a member of the national ANSWER Steering
Committee, said, "This is the opportunity for everyone who
opposes the war—no matter who you plan to vote for—to be
on the street to demand ’Bring the troops home now! End
the occupation of Iraq, Palestine, and Haiti.’ We are
encouraging everyone—activists, students, and
families—to join us in this historic challenge to war and
racism."
"It’s our hope that what happened today will begin pushing
back the efforts by the government to restrict free
speech, right of assembly, and the right to march," said
Peter Gilbert, an activist from North Carolina who
traveled to Boston to help organize the march on the DNC.
"The Police Commissioner and the Mayor of New York City
should be condemned for denying those organizing the big
protest at the Republican convention in late August the
right to rally in a acceptable place. We hope that what
happened today shames the New York City government for
violating the rights of protestors."
