Into History’s Cauldron
By Manuel Valenzuela
In an immoral war with no cause, in an aggressive invasion without reason, in a dehumanizing occupation with no justification, those pawns fighting the battles implemented by elite warmongers and corporatists in power have no enthusiasm to risk their lives, sacrifice their minds and endanger their bodies to the horrors befalling men fighting their fellow men. Yet today, in the lands of deserts ancient and wise, where once glorious rivers (…)

Gore Vidal: Iran next, then who?

6 commentsGeorge Bush’s apparent desire to create a state of perpetual war spells disaster
Last week, courtesy of Seymour Hersh and The New Yorker, we learned that a long-held prediction of mine had come true. American forces have been operating inside Iran, thus extending yet further the President’s "war on terror".
There is no war, other than the one the President unilaterally is waging against a weak Congress and weak countries with oil. It’s true that Congress has given the President certain (…) -

41 comments’They can’t throw us all in jail’ Growing number of soldiers oppose — and refuse to report for — the war in Iraq
The Pentagon doesn’t like to talk about it. But as the war in Iraq becomes ever more violent and prolonged, an increasing number of soldiers are opposing the war — up to and including refusing to fight.
Thus far, the numbers, compared to Vietnam, are still small. The Pentagon estimated in 2003 that nearly 3,000 soldiers had deserted — that is, had been AWOL for more than a (…) -
Press Conference Shows Bush in Denial about Iraq Reality
28 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
The first presidential news conference of the Bush administration’s second term was dominated by the subject Bush sought to avoid in his inaugural address: the growing crisis of the US occupation regime in Iraq.
The press conference was called on short notice, only hours after the crash of a Marine helicopter in the western Iraqi desert that killed 31 US soldiers, the greatest loss of life on the US side in a single event since Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Bush’s (…) -
UN rights expert accuses Israel of war crimes over house demolitions
27 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
The UN rapporteur for human rights in the occupied territories accused the Israeli government of war crimes for the punitive destruction of Palestinian homes in a report released here Thursday.
"It is difficult to resist the conclusion that punitive house demolitions constitute serious war crimes," John Dugard, a South African law professor, said in the report.
Dugard said the destruction of Palestinian homes following acts of hostility against Israeli forces were carried out as (…) -

The ACA document can be viewed at www.rawprint.com/besen/012504_aca_letter.php

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION by Cindy Sheehan
Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld continues to astound us Gold Star Families with his heartlessness, callousness and disrespect in the faces of our children who are being killed in the mindless invasion and occupation of Iraq.
I am one of the founding members of a group called Gold Star Families for Peace. Some of us families who have lost loved ones in this illegal and immoral war in Iraq have (…) -
Communist success in Italy backfires on Prodi
25 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By Tony Barber in Rome
An experiment in holding US-style primary elections has backfired for Italy’s centre-left opposition by denting the image of moderate reformism that party leaders deem vital to defeat Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, in 2006.
To the surprise of opinion pollsters, and to the dismay of many centre-left leaders, a self-declared gay Catholic hardline communist, emerged as the winner this week in a primary contest to choose the opposition’s candidate to run for (…) -

PARIS - Some 210,000 public sector workers marched through French cities on Thursday in widening protests over pay, reforms and job cuts that have sent a sharp warning to President Jacques Chirac’s conservative government.
On the third day of protests, some schools closed because of a one-day strike by teachers, and a stoppage by air traffic controllers grounded flights at Bordeaux in western France.
The protests followed a warning strike by rail workers that (…) -
Support Our Troops: Bring Them Home

We must withdraw our military from Iraq, the sooner the better. The reason is simple: Our presence there is a disaster for the American people and an even bigger disaster for the Iraqi people.
It is a strange logic to declare, as so many in Washington do, that it was wrong for us to invade Iraq but right for us to remain. A recent New York Times editorial sums up the situation accurately: Some 21 months after the American invasion, United States military forces remain (…)
