Tomgram: Mike Davis on the Pentagon’s urban war planning
In the escalating crisis that is Iraq, American Marines, after days of battle followed by a tenuous "truce," are deep into but not in control of Fallujah, a resistant city of 300,000 in the "Sunni Triangle," while the Army finds itself poised at the edge of Iraq’s Shiite holy cities. Our troops are toeing what the most revered Shiite religious figures have termed a "red line" across which lies the path to "300 Fallujahs."
This is, (…) -
Other things Iraq war funding can pay for
3 June 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentCongress and President Bush have so far provided $119.4 billion for the war in Iraq. Here are examples of what else that money could buy. It could send 748,495 people, nearly everyone in Jacksonville, Fla., to Harvard University for four years. Based on Harvard’s 2004-05 school year costing $39,880 for tuition, fees, room and board, multiplied by four. Or send 2,806,506 people — almost all the residents of Chicago — to the average-priced public university for four years, based on The (…)

Media activism - some reflections
For us to film, to take pictures, to make an interview on a demonstration or during an action is a kind of action like spraying, speaking with megaphone or carrying the reinforced front banner. You’re a part of the demo/action and therefore also responsible for it. Because of that, and especially because your (…) -

2 June 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
7 commentsA portion of this conjecture appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, May 29, and remained among the ‘five top stories viewed online’ over the weekend. Here is the original text, plus amendments. The content is largely drawn from the collaborative act of detective work unfolding on the web. To draw firm conclusions about the circumstances of the Berg beheading would be unwise at this stage, however US citizens may wish to pressure the Pentagon to release all tapes, transcripts and (…)

5 commentsMichael Moore on Saturday won the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize for his controversial documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11".
It was the first documentary to win the Palme d’Or since Jacques Cousteau’s 1956 film "The Silent World".
"Fahrenheit 9/11" is a scathing commentary on White House actions before and after the September 11 attacks.
Michael Moore’s film satirically skewers George W. Bush for stealing the 2000 presidential election and then being on perpetual sporting holidays (…)
