BOWING to popular pressure, the Italian Government said last night that it would start pulling its more than 3,000 troops out of Iraq in September.
The surprise announcement by Silvio Berlusconi, the Prime Minister, came less than two weeks after US troops shot dead Nicola Calipari, Italy’s top intelligence officer in Iraq, as he escorted a freed Italian hostage to safety.

GENEVA - The United States, usually a finger-pointer on human rights, could end up in the dock itself over reports of torture and abuse in its war on terror when the United Nations begins a worldwide scrutiny this week.
Activists, such as the New York-based Human Rights Watch, are urging members of the Commission on Human Rights to condemn Washington for mistreatment of prisoners detained abroad.
If any such move emerges during the commission’s annual session, (…) -

Drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is again on the table in Congress, this time in the budget bill. How many times must Americans say it? Leave our wilderness alone!
Human beings need wilderness and open space. Some years ago, a friend teaching at a rural Michigan campus invited high schoolers from Detroit to study ecology. At first, the students were frightened and hesitant but the woods slowly drew them out. They found things, camped out, (…) -

5 commentsby Anh Hieu
US Judge Jack B. Weinstein’s dismissal on Thursday of the compensation lawsuit by Vietnamese Agent Orange victims was unjust, immoral and an irresponsible denial of the US’s war crimes in Viet Nam.
And, it signals a new uphill battle for justice for Viet Nam despite the solid body of evidence against the toxin’s devastating effects on the land and generation-after-generation of Vietnamese people.
Judge Weinstein claimed the documents presented in the New York Court were not (…) -

Sound the alarm! America, the land of the free, is now under attack, not by Al Qaeda, not by Iraqi "insurgents," not by an enemy confronted on foreign soil; not even by one that homeland security could ever stop. It is an insidious, invisible assailant, more hidden than a terrorist cell. It is one that invades virtually every American household on a daily basis without leaving a trace of its deceitful, dangerous nature. Its whores, draped in dignified apparel, sit (…) -
