Hamas’ stunning victory underlines the contradictions and hypocrisies in Bush’s Mideast policies.
By Juan Cole
Jan. 27, 2006 | The stunning victory of the militant Muslim fundamentalist Hamas Party in the Palestinian elections underlines the central contradictions in the Bush administration’s policies toward the Middle East. Bush pushes for elections, confusing them with democracy, but seems blind to the dangers of right-wing populism. At the same time, he continually undermines the (…)

What Was the Matter with Ohio?: Unions and Evangelicals in the Rust Belt
27 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
by James Straub
It was a fittingly ironic end to an election full of grotesque twists: When George W. Bush was narrowly reelected president of the United States, it was the electoral votes of the state he had harmed most that gave him the final nudge across the finish line. Ohio went for the second election in a row to the Republican clown prince. But if the first Bush victory was tragedy, the one in 2004 was surely farce: has world history ever turned before on the artful elevation of gay (…) -
The Chinks in the ’Hillary’s an ’08 Lock’ CW Armor
26 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
by Arianna Huffington
You hear it again and again around the Beltway. Hillary sitting atop the Democratic ticket in ’08 is all but a done deal. She’s got too much name recognition, too much money, too much star power to be denied. In short, the Washington Conventional Wisdom is that Hillary is unbeatable for the nomination because she is unbeatable for the nomination.
QED.
But how reliable is this piece of DC CW? According to a quick survey of the facts on the ground: not very.
Let’s (…) -
Why the “Free State” of Maryland Isn’t So “Free!”
25 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
The governor of Maryland receives an annual salary of $150,000 for fulfilling his official duties. Nevertheless, the incumbent office holder, Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., a Republican, and Pavlovian lapdog for the warmongering President George W. Bush, raised $4.6 million last year for his November 7, 2006 reelection efforts. The two Democratic wannabes, Martin O’Malley and Douglas M. Duncan, raised a combined $5.6 million in 2005, in their quests for the same governorship. I say a plague on all (…)

Deliberate birth of an activist: Fo runs for mayor in Milan
23 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsby Richard Owen in Milan
OUTSIDERS, says Dario Fo, think of Milan in terms of fashion and style, "but the people who run the city have neither elegance nor moral values. This used to be a city in which engineers, architects and artists all thrived."
That’s why Italy’s finance and fashion capital could soon find as its mayor the Nobel prize-winning playwright, a man with a reputation as an anarchic clown and a merciless, sharp-tongued satirist of the rich and powerful.

Pity the Orphan
23 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
by Uri Avnery
IT WAS a colorful day in Bil’in. Political flags of many colors were fluttering in the brisk breeze, the vivid election posters and the colorful graffiti on the walls adding their bit. It was the biggest demonstration in the beleaguered village for a long time. This week, the protest against the Fence was interwoven with Palestinian electioneering.
I was happily marching along in the wintry sunshine, holding high the Gush Shalom emblem of the flags of Israel and Palestine (…) -
The Right to Vote
23 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
by Jesse Jackson Jr.
"The vote" is a human right. It is seen as an American right. In a democracy there is nothing more fundamental than having the right to vote.
And yet the right to vote is not a fundamental right in our Constitution. Some liberals argue that the fundamental right to vote for every American citizen is implied in the Constitution, based on Supreme Court precedent. Yet when I ask them about the denial of voting representation in Congress to District of Columbia citizens, (…) -
The Stolen Election of 2004 : Democracy RIP
23 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsI well remember Novembre 2, 2004. The exit polls , they are actually two separate exit polls , showed Democrat John Kerry was headed for a popular vote victory of between 2% - 4%. It wasn’t just the early exits but the third and fourth waves of exit polls that seemed to bode such an ill wind for Team Bush. My hopes soared until are I started monitoring the blog at National Review , the redoubt for bed-wetting chickenhawks who want YOU to die to sate Israel’s grand imperial (…)

Weighing the Options: The Next Path for Israel/Palestine
21 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
By Remi Kanazi
Given the recent political death of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, many in Israel and the Occupied Territories are wondering who will the former premier’s spot. Likewise, Palestinians and Israelis are closely watching to see who will govern Palestinian society. The Palestinians engage in the political process first-with parliamentary elections on January 25. The question on how smoothly they will run still remains. It is of the utmost importance that Palestinian (…)
