JAZZMAN CHRONICLES. DISSEMINATE FREELY.
It was the Great Depression that made the New Deal possible. Without it we would be a different nation. We may never have passed Social Security or Medicare. We may never have built the highways and bridges that are a legacy of public works. We might never have ensured the right to organized labor or passed legislation to protect workers and secure unemployment benefits. We may never have established regulatory limits on the size and conduct of (…)

Why Morocco is Proposing Autonomy Now?
31 July 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By Chasli
Just a few observations about why I am so skeptical about Morocco’s autonomy plan and what I see as Morocco’s reasons for going down the autonomy road.
Anyone who thinks that Morocco would ever allow the Sahrawi to control any of the territory’s mineral or fishing wealth is seriously suffering from “head-in-the-sand” syndrome. It just won’t happen. The Moroccan military, elite, and monarchy have been happily stealing Western Sahara’s abundant resources for over thirty years (…) -
Why Was Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative Devised?
29 July 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
This view that Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Western Sahara should be supported because it is a commendable and reasonable compromise to once and for all overcome “the deadlock in United Nations’ mediated negotiations” has been getting a lot of play time recently by the pro-Rabat forces. The view is unacceptable and should be soundly rejected because its basic premise — that the “deadlock is the result of a “fail[ure] to reach a mutually-acceptable solution — is just not true. The (…)

We need allies like Canada, Israeli foreign minister says
Excerpt from a Radio Reka interview (translated from Russian) with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on his visit to Canada late last month.
Q: Please tell us about the visit to Canada.
Avigdor Lieberman: Canada is definitely an ally. Today it’s hard to point out our most loyal ally, but Canada is undoubtedly an exception, in the positive sense. Canada was the first to boycott the Durban II (…) -

The other day I went with my son to the metal salvage yard. We had been cleaning up the shop and had two or three engine blocks plus the usual amalgamation of sheet metal. We pulled into the yard to wait in line for the weigh-in scale and in front of us was a large construction truck loaded down with scaffolding. Scaffolding on its way to the crusher and then to be melted down because that construction company saw no future need in owning scaffolding as a tool of its (…) -

Carla Bruni performs at Nelson Mandela birthday concert
21 July 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsCarla Bruni may be the First Lady of France, but she had no chance of becoming the “first diva” at an exuberant Nelson Mandela 91st birthday concert in New York. Bruni’s first public performance since marrying Nicolas Sarkozy, who was in the audience, put her on stage at Radio City Music Hall along with Gloria Gaynor, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, L’il Kim and Cyndi Lauper, plus the male acts will.i.am, Wyclef Jean, Josh Groban, Jesse McCartney and Stevie Wonder.
Gaynor (…) -
Will Richard B. Cheney & Other ever be brught to Justice?
20 July 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsNo one is above the law.
But, recent news reports indicate that former Vice President Richard B. Cheney created a secret CIA assassination program and then hid it from Congress, the public and the Justice Department.
This has to be the last straw.
This is the latest in a series of news reports indicating that the Vice President and other high-ranking members of the Bush Cabal conspired to break our laws and then cover it up.
From Watergate to Iran Contra, special prosecutors have (…) -
A New Beginning

Political parties, like people, have a life span, but unlike people they are driven by their relevance. Political parties which are no longer relevant cease to exist.
The Republican Party is a perfect example; its central core values of low taxes, small government and less regulation have been proven false and the Republicans have been exposed for what they are, the party of the rich, the party of less taxes for the rich, and the party of less opportunity for the poor. (…)
