First, the facts: according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), “Senators Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) introduced the "Project BioShield II Act of 2005" (S. 975) on April 29, 2005. The bill builds upon the first BioShield bill, which was signed into law on July 21, 2004, and authorized $5.6 billion over 10 years to encourage pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop bioterrorism (…)

Did Stevenson Die because of medical care delays caused by rabid right wing hate?
by Elizabeth Ferrari
I have lived for the last ten weeks with Andy Stephenson’s cancer. And in the most useless way. I couldn’t take it away, couldn’t relieve him of it, couldn’t mind it for a few hours so he could be freed to do the election reform work he so loved.
Andy was one of the most luminous people I have never met, because we never shared room temperature. I (…) -
Unborn US babies soaked in chemicals
14 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentUnborn US babies are soaking in a stew of chemicals, including mercury, petrol by-products and pesticides, according to a report released today.
Although the effects on the babies are not clear, the survey prompted several members of US Congress to press for legislation that would strengthen controls on chemicals in the environment.
The report by the Environmental Working Group is based on tests of 10 samples of umbilical cord blood taken by the American Red Cross.
They found an (…) -

Exploding Autism Epidemic Tied To Greed Of Pharmaceutical Companies John Hanchette July 12, 2005 OLEAN, NY — Here’s an update on a topic featured in this space before: the alarming exponential increase in young children with autism. You may have missed it, but late in June both houses of the New York State Legislature passed an act that, beginning in mid-2008, would prohibit further sale or use of the mercury compound thimerosal in vaccines for children younger than 3, and for inoculating (…)

BUSH MAY BE MANIC
2 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsPRESIDENTIAL MANIC BEHAVIOR By Peter Fredson July 2, 2005
When President Bush pranced before a crowd of captive soldiers last Tuesday at Fort Bragg he swaggered, smirked, gesticulated, glad-handed, grinned, and in many respects acted as though he had swallowed a handful of uppers before coming on-stage. Yet, despite grandiose pronouncements about offering a new strategy, Bush gave the same basic speech he gave many times previously: staying the course, insurgents hating democracy, our (…) -
Andrew Sullivan’s Reckless Rhetoric
29 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
by Wayne Besen
First, I want to say that in some respects I am an Andrew Sullivan fan. At his best, he is an articulate spokesperson and a brilliant writer. On more than one occasion, he has obliterated gay rights opponents on television, helping to advance our cause. As an openly gay man living with HIV, Sullivan has also accomplished the remarkable feat of starting a wildly popular Blog with a sizable conservative following. For this, he deserves nothing but respect and admiration. (…) -
How America Uses Aid As A Pretext For Intervention

1 commentHow America Uses Aid As A Pretext For Intervention Ali Fayyad Edited by Rob Gibran June 25, 2005 Washington’s decision to send food aid to North Korea, rather than a purely humanitarian act spurred by deep sentiments of benevolence, brotherhood and care for one’s fellow man, is a cold, calculated decision to further its political, economic and military interests.
In a new development on the North Korean front, the American government has decided to send a 50,000 ton shipment of food aid (…) -
Hemp for Victory
26 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsCongressman Ron Paul, a libertarian from Texas and an obstetrician who has delivered over 6000 babies, is trying to deliver our farmers from a bureaucratic medievalism in Washington that keeps saying "No" to growing industrial hemp.
Many farmers want to grow this 5000 year old long fiber plant that has been turned into thousands of products since being domesticated by the ancient Chinese. That is their heresy. The enforcer is the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in Washington, DC, which has (…) -
Supporting the troops: House passes bi-partisan ammendment to fund research on Gulf War Syndrome

3 commentsCongressman Kucinich offered an amendment to H.R. 2863, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2006.
"Mr. Chairman, this budget-neutral amendment will improve the health of veterans past, present and future by funding research on Gulf War illnesses. I am proud to do so with my colleagues, Mr. Shays, and Mr. Sanders. I thank both of the cosponsors for their commitment to veterans’ health.
"I would also like to point out that this amendment is endorsed by the American Legion, (…) -
