Human rights activists are being denied entry on a regular basis
by the Israeli government to Israel and the occupied territories

WHO : International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activist Ann Petter,
ISM activist Jamie Spector (Live by telephone from Italy)
Attorney Leah Tzemel
WHERE : The Ambassador Hotel, East Jerusalem
WHEN : 12:00 PM, Monday, July 26, 2004

ISM activist Ann Petter who was released from an Israeli detention center today after being held for 33 days will speak and answer questions about her effort to challenge the state of Israel’s restrictions on the entry of activists into Israel and Palestine. Ms. Petter was released on the condition that she not enter the Occupied Territories or approach within one kilometer of Israel’s Apartheid Wall, and therefore denied the opportunity to carry out the human rights work that was the goal of her visit. Ms. Petter is graphic designer who lives in New York City.

Ms. Petter will be joined in the press conference by telephone from Italy by American Jewish International Solidarity Movement activist Jamie Spector. Ms. Spector was held in detention for 12 days before being ordered by Judge Sara Dotan to leave the country on Friday July 23. Ms. Spector is social worker who lives in San Francisco.

Today an Israeli judge also ruled that Dutch ISM activist and social studies teacher Christine Griefer would be barred from entering Israel and sent back to the Netherlands after 16 days in detention

Ms. Petter and Ms. Spector were coming to protest non-violently against Israel’s Apartheid Wall, the Wall that the International Court of Justice recently ruled to be a violation of international law which must be dismantled. Ms. Petter and Ms. Spector were both denied entry based on secret evidence that they were unable review and contest. Approximately 740 Palestinians administrative detainees are being held by the Israeli government for renewable terms of six months based on secret evidence (B’Tselem).

Ms. Petter and Ms. Spector will both speak about the Israeli government’s efforts to deny the access of international supporters of Palestinian rights to Israel and Palestine.
