No situation can continue to exist for long without an ideological reason. That’s how when once it was clear that it was not achieving its aims, an unsuccessful military campaign was upgraded with the wave of a magic wand to the level of a war of survival. When everyone understood that a moral reason had to be found both for the dimensions of the destruction sowed in Lebanon and the killing of the civilian population there, and for the Israeli dead and wounded (nobody is (…)

Borrowing from the world of soccer beloved to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, the Israel Defense Forces operation in Lebanon went into overtime yesterday.
Olmert wants to take another stab at a decisive conclusion before the UN Security Council blows the final whistle. That’s why he convened the cabinet yesterday to approve a wide-scale ground operation targeting villages used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Olmert is fighting the battle over public opinion, both at home and (…) -

ISRAEL/LEBANON: ISRAEL AND HIZBULLAH MUST SPARE CIVILIANS
Obligations under international humanitarian law of the parties to the conflict in Israel and Lebanon
Introduction
The armed conflict between Israel and Hizbullah continues to be characterized by killing of civilians, mass forced displacement and attacks on civilian infrastructure. The evidence so far, including the pattern of attacks, the extent of civilian casualties and statements by the parties indicates that serious (…) -
Robert Fisk: A Nato-led force would be in Israel’s interests, but not Lebanon’s

by Robert Fisk
Every foreign army - including the Israelis - comes to grief in Lebanon.
So, how come George Bush and Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara - after their inevitable disasters in Afghanistan and Iraq - believe that a Nato-led force is going to survive on the south Lebanese border? The Israelis would obviously enjoy watching its deployment - it will be time for the West to take the casualties - but Hizbollah is likely to view its arrival as a proxy Israeli army. It is, after all, (…) -

The Israeli army has been accused of using Palestinian civilians as human shields in an operation in northern Gaza.
According to the Israeli human rights group, B’tselem, six civilians including two minors were subjected to the illegal tactic during an incursion into the town of Beit Hanoun last week.
There are piles of rubble leading up to the hole in Hazem Ali’s house.
It’s a week since Israel came into Beit Hanoun, but the gash in the side of his house is still (…) -

Propaganda is part of every war, just like bombs and soldiers. Still, it’s remarkable how professionally Israel deals with foreign journalists, catering conscientiously to all their needs. Lunch included.
The phone rings at 9 a.m. — right on time. "Hello, this is the Government Press Office," pipes a woman’s voice. "What are you planning to do today? Do you need an idea?" And then the suggestions just keep coming — interview partners; a tour to the houses in Haifa (…) -
Images of protest against Lebanon massacre

by Daniel Patrick Welch
These are some signs made for a local Lebanese solidarity event. The original inspiration came from an interview I heard with Tina Naccache from Lebanon, who mentioned that they had made pictures of bombs with US and Israeli flags on them for a protest in Beirut.
It seemed right to the point, and I came up with these - I really wanted to drive home the central point of US complicity for an American audience, which I hope I’ve done passing well.
The links between (…) -

Swept up by a wave of patriotism after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Chris Magaoay joined the Marine Corps in November 2004.
The newly married Magaoay thought a military career would allow him to continue his college education, help his country and set his life on the right path.

"The media focuses its total attention and coverage on the suffering of Israelis and their uncontrollable ?anxiety? BUT, more importantly, they accept and parrot (…) -

UK envoy’s plea over Lebanon urges press not to highlight suffering
Riyadh --- Regional press has taken strong note of the British Charge d’Affaires to Bahrain, Stephen Harrison’s request to Bahraini newspapers to stop publishing pictures of destruction and suffering in Lebanon.
Quoting the incident the Saudi daily Arab News on Thursday said the Bahraini press has interpreted the request to self-censorship.
The English version of the letter provided by the embassy in Bahrain quoted (…)
