It’s More Important Than Halting Nuclear Proliferation
by Bill Christison and Kathleen Christison
January 1, 2006 Counterpunch
The peace movements of the entire world should be in crisis mode right now, working non-stop to prevent the U.S. and Israel from starting a war against Iran. (See the James Petras article in CounterPunch on December 24, 2005 titled Iran in the Crosshairs for the best summary of the present situation.) The reckless and unnecessary dangers arising from such a war (…)

The Opposite of Good is Apathy
6 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
"The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal and hasten the resurrection of the dead." William Lord Garrison
The apathy of most of America is stunning and appalling to me. When I found this quote I was filled with wide-eyed wonder that there is one statue left in America complete with statue, or one grave or tomb still occupied.
On October 26th, as MoveOn.org was holding its candlelight vigils across the country to mourn the death of the 2000 th (…) -
Cindy Sheehan urges Hawaii to Unite to Stop the War in Iraq and Impeach Bush
5 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentPeace activist Cindy Sheehan urged a standing-room-only crowd at the Church of the Crossroads last night to unite to stop the war in Iraq, impeach President Bush and "see justice" for those killed since the war started in 2003.
"If you don’t want the war machine to invade your island, don’t let it happen," said Sheehan, whose 24-year-old son died in Iraq and who gained international attention for staging an anti-war demonstration outside Bush’s ranch in Texas.
"Anybody can do what I do. (…) -
The Army of Good Americans

Marching Forward
Festering in our midst like a toxic cloud of pollution the army of good Americans exists, living and working among us, inhabiting our neighborhoods and cities, co-existing peacefully with us, though perceiving an utterly different conception of reality than the rest of us. Their numbers, though dwindling more every day with the almost weekly revelations of corporatist lies built upon corporatist lies and government (…) -

Friends Don’t Let Friends Commit War Crimes

1 comment"You’re like an ambassador for peace," a Spanish journalist told me as we finished one of the dozens of interviews I gave in Europe. I did this interview right before I went to urge the Spanish Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs to oppose the war more strenuously.
In reality, I did feel like an ambassador for peace as I traveled around Europe for 16 days in December.

WHAT LABOR CAN’T SAY
3 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsby Aldon Morris and Dan Clawson
What kind of labor writing gets suppressed in the U.S. today? Apparently it doesn’t take much.
We wrote an article on "Lessons of the Civil Rights Movement for Building a Worker Rights Movement" whose last paragraph said:
Finally, a fundamental question faces workers today: do they have the courage to get up off their knees and confront powerful employers and corporations? A movement requires moral authority and enormous sacrifices by its participants (…) -

The Carnival of Values and the Exchange Value of Carnival
29 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
In this issue of The Commoner we are beginning to clear a path (or maybe several paths) out of the dust emerging from the front line, and try to make sense of what is the reason for the smoke and sparks. We see a strange phenomenon occurring: what we practice is often not what we value and what we value is often not what we practice (and in saying this let us not forget that “practice” means many diverse things: work, shopping, eating, filling forms, writing, taking the train, watching the (…)
