The Cobb-LaMarche legal team is weighing its options after a New Mexico court yesterday reaffirmed a decision by New Mexico’s Democratic Governor Bill Richardson and two colleagues on the New Mexico State Canvassing Board to allow a recount of the state’s presidential ballots, but only if David Cobb and other recount advocates pay $1.4 million by today to cover recount costs. Updates to this story will be posted here later today.

"There’s tremendous grassroots support for the recount and for verifying the accuracy of our voting system. We have 800 volunteers who are ready to jump in and monitor the recount process," said Rick Lass, the New Mexico recount coordinator for the Cobb-LaMarche campaign

SANTA FE — Green and Libertarian candidates seeking a recount of New Mexico’s presidential votes are facing a deadline today to pay $1.4 million for the recount.

Instead, they have appealed to New Mexico’s highest court.

They asked the state Supreme Court yesterday to order the recount without the upfront payment. They made the request after a lower court ruled against them.

The Supreme Court hasn’t taken action on the request.

Lawyer Lowell Finley called the required payment "an unreasonable and illegal demand" by the state canvassing board.

He says the candidates’ previous deposit of $114,400 for per-machine and per-precinct costs specified in the statute is all that’s required in advance.

The state has said it doesn’t want taxpayers to be stuck with the bill.

  • President Bush won by less than 1 percent, or nearly 6,000 votes.

  • NM taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for a recount, especially since Green and Libertarian votes probably missed the radar screen when the results came in.

  • How about the taxpayers who are paying for the unprecedented military security for the "inauguration".

    Most money spent in history!

Most likely for all that "privatized" security we love to hire, that have "tin foil hat" connections to GOP politicians and torture scandals.

    Dezenhall resources, are you listening?

Sheesh you wouldn’t know they had a Democratic governor. Richardson IS a Democrat, isn’t he?

  • A good idea! Ohio should of done this also!
