POWEL’S VISIT CANCELLED!VICTORY FOR THE ANTIWAR MOVEMENT
by Open-Publishing - Tuesday 21 October 2003Collin Powel was forced NOT to visit Athens on 22 of October and this is great victory for our antiwar movement!
On Sunday the biggest newspapers announced all the details of the visit and that State Department send to Greek Foreign Ministry an advanced team to check security of the meeting place. The same day finally the greek government announced that he can visit due to "heavy programm".
When we learned about this visit we moved very quickly.Stop the War Coalition called a demo on 22 of October. The next dayAthens was full of thousands of posters and activists were leafleting in thousands outside the Metro everyday. Athens Labor Center declared Powel persona non grata as murderer of innocent people in Afganistan and Iraq.
The day after the cancelling of the visit the bigest newspaper had a central article with the title "if he was here..." .In this they wrote that "...Powel would be in the very difficult position to explain why the Athenians were demonstrating against him"...
So we wish our friends in Madrid to have the same succes against the Donation Meeting in support of Occupation!
We still have our demo on 22 of October to celebrate and organize the next step which is ESF in Paris!
