by Open-Publishing - Friday 30 July 2004

Pakistan has told the U.S. that it captured a wanted al-Qaeda suspect who may have been involved in the 1998 terrorist bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, a Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman said.

The FBI is looking into the matter, agency spokeswoman Donna Spiser said in Washington.

The suspect is Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian who is on the U.S.’s most wanted terrorists'' list. Ghailani was among seven people named by the U.S. in May as part of an appeal for information amid concerns of a possible terrorist attack. The suspect, who may be 30, was indicted in New York in late 1998 in connection with the Aug. 7, 1998, embassy bombings. There is a $25 million reward for information leading to his capture or conviction, according to the FBI. FBI Director Robert Mueller said in May that Ghailani and another wanted man, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, participated in the 1998 embassy bombingsand have the wherewithal, the skill and the ability to undertake attacks both against American interests overseas, as well as in the United States.’’

Pakistani Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat told the Associated Press that investigators already have gotten ``some very valuable and useful leads’’ from Ghailani. The minister said Ghailani was captured Sunday in the eastern city of Gujrat along with at least 15 other people.

The raid also turned up AK-47 rifles, plastic chemicals, two computers and diskettes and an unspecified amount of money, according to. (AP)
