YOU WANT ME TO PAY FOR WHAT?!?
As you scramble to fill out your 1040 form this week, consider this:
When Congress voted to authorize the use of military force in Iraq, it included two requirements. The first was that the President prove that Iraq was in defiance of the United Nations by being in possession of banned weapons of mass destruction. The second was that the President have proof that Iraq was involved in 9-11. In his letter to Congress activating the (…)

AD HOMINEM PORK ROAST
By Peter Fredson
June 24, 2005
I have watched the news and blogs concerning Karl Rovers’ remarks about “liberals” yesterday. I have also seen some recent photographs of him. The one I saw today reminded me of the portrait of a pig, with an apple stuffed in its mouth, stretched out on a platter, waiting to be barbecued. I wondered how much fat could be squeezed out of that carcass, how much useful pork, and how many cracklings he would provide. Is he good for (…) -
Senior Aides Refuse To Testify Against Saddam

Senior Aides Refuse To Testify Against Saddam Saad al-Awsi June 19, 2005 At a tribunal set up to prosecute Saddam and his associates for war crimes, former officials of his regime avoided answering or refused to admit to having committed any crime or to say an unkind word about their former leader. Ex-senior Iraqi aides currently in US custody have refused to testify against their former leader Saddam Hussein when recently questioned by magistrates.
An Iraqi tribunal set up to try Saddam (…) -
Amnesty International And Mr. Bush
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
Amnesty International And Mr. Bush Hassan Al-Haifi June 20, 2005 It goes without saying that it seems that the issues of human rights and the right to uphold different political views has never been subjected to a harder ordeal than that being witnessed in the present time. Not only is the fight for human rights becoming a formidable challenge in the Third World countries, where, in some countries, even the most basic of human rights are as far away as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but even the (…)

American government pressuring foreign countries to censor news-US guilty of more war crimes
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsAt long last, the culminating session of the World Tribunal on Iraq is upon us. As a witness providing testimony, like the other witnesses I’m being interviewed by many outlets. Today, one of them was by reporters for one of the larger newspapers in Turkey, the Yeni Safak Newspaper.
I’ll leave the reporters nameless, for reasons you’ll soon see.
The newspaper has been translating various articles of mine into Turkish and running them, particularly those concerning the most recent (…) -
Timetable: Six More Years In Iraq

Timetable: Six More Years In Iraq Richard Reeves June 23, 2005 NEW YORK - The words are almost always the same: "threat" ... "atrocities" ... "secret intelligence" ... "mission" ... "preventive" ... "fog" ... "brave" ... "terrorists" ... "Support our troops" ... "Stay the course" ... "waste"... "treason" ... "timetable" ... "withdraw" ... "tragedy." It usually takes about nine years to say them all. Americans said them about Vietnam between 1964 and 1973. The Soviets said them about (…)

The war president
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
In this former imperial capital, every square seems to contain a giant statue of a Habsburg on horseback, posing as a conquering hero. America’s founders knew all too well how war appeals to the vanity of rulers and their thirst for glory. That’s why they took care to deny presidents the kingly privilege of making war at their own discretion. But after 9/11 President George W. Bush, with obvious relish, declared himself a "war president." And he kept the nation focused on martial matters (…)

Grilled Rumsfeld Anyone?
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentRarely in recent years has Washington seen so dramatic a clash between the legislative and executive branches as was witnessed Thursday, when U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, D-Masschusetts, went after Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on the question of whether the Pentagon chief should resign for mismanaging the war in Iraq.
"This war has been consistently and grossly mismanaged. And we are now in a seemingly intractable quagmire. Our troops are dying. And there really is no end in (…) -
Dump Bush and the Congress he rode in on
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsIn the Northwest, most people I know have (at least) a healthy dose of scepticism towards Federal Government solutions to our problems. Even outside the more liberal population centers of Portland and Seattle, many Northwesterners have rejected the new paradigm and started working towards a better future. All around, farmers’ markets are spreading like wildfire, though these blazes only really threaten WalMart, Albertsons, and petro-chemical dependence. Or, take "conservative" Idaho. The (…)

Where are impeachers now that we need them?
24 June 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsI have been retired for more than 20 years, so I know what Social Security means to the elderly. Yet we have President Bush still pushing his plan for personal accounts, which would be a disaster. They can use IRAs for that.
Another thing that angers me is the snickering about the filing cabinets full of useless IOUs. The U.S. government promises to pay those. I realize that under the Bush administration they may be useless, because it wants to run the U.S. government as Bush did his (…)
