Governments USA

Anyone honestly believe one can impeach and convict a sitting Republican President with the Senate in the hands of the Republican party? Let’s be realistic here: If there was gross misuse of the available intelligence on Iraq by the executive branch of the government, then there was attendant gross negligence on the part of the legislative branch of the government not to verify the faulty intellligence. They couldn’t impeach and convict Bush if they wanted to because their own job security would be threatened. It’s too late, the legislative branch was complicit by accepting the intelligence implicitly. Case closed.

  • Unfortunately, there is a lack of intelligence on the part of the American people.

We, Republicans and Democrats should demand an explanation!

This is not partisan! We all have friends and relatives over there. I don’t know anyone personally, but they are my brothers and sisters.

Our people are paying the price.......for what?

If we can not get them out, we should at least demand that the depleted uranium munitions be abandoned and our people should know the implications of exposure.

Do you know that our "Support Our Troops" government doesn’t extend healthcare to the National Guard and Reservists because its too expensive?

Impeach Bush before he bombs Iran!

    • In better times, my comments might be dismissed as pure fiction—fiction can be a good thing. Thirty years ago, even to think this way would have prompted me to check myself in for therapy. But what was once considered implausible suddenly will soon be reality. We are in the midst of a governmental coup by a group of 9 or so neo-cons with help from their "friends." What am I talking about? (1) I’m talking about a president who is systemically dismantling our system of cheques and balances and consolidating ALL power in the executive branch. Soon, following our next real or engineered 9/11 event, even the friendly GOP-controlled Congress will be stripped of its authority by action of FEMA via martial law; (2) I’m talking about a president and his neo-con brain-trust who crafted Patriot Act I (10/01) ostencibly to protect us from terrorism but, in reality, are using it as a bald power grab at the expense of our constitution. For starters, it guts our 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments. You may say that this doesn’t matter so long as "good" people are in control of "our" government—think about that one for a moment. You can take our constitution for granted but when it’s gone, it will really be gone and the American democratic experiment will be gone as well. You would expect that a measure this extreme would demand extensive scrutiny by Congress, but not so! On a Senate vote of 99-1 and a House vote of about 365-66, Patriot Act I sailed into law without members even being allowed to read it prior to the vote. Assuming that a party-line vote will extend or make permanent all provisions of Patriot Act I, we face the prospect of an already drafted and much-darker Patriot Act II (2/03) to be rushed through Congress when the next 9/11 occurs (however, this may be accomplished by attaching riders to the current bill to extend the Patriot Act).

What does this have to do with Iraq? Everything. It deals with the character of the man and his administration, what they’ve tried to do here and what they’re trying to do globally. There’s a jury instruction which reads to the effect that, "if you find that the defendant has testified falsely in one respect, you may disregard his testimony in its entirety." While no charges are pending against the president that I’m aware of, last time I checked, he does still work for us, the American people. There’s enough of a public record to make the case that the American people and world have been misled regarding Iraq, among many other things. Impeachment has been suggested for far less offenses. Such talk doesn’t have a prayer of a chance in the current environment but the grounds do exist.

Currently the president is polling at or near the lows of his presidency. This is my immediate concern. During his presidency, there has been an uncanny correlation between the president’s low polling numbers and several dramatic events in the "war on terror" (for example, numerous terror alerts, the War with Iraq, even 9/11). Even as we sort through our mess in Iraq, we are putting Iran into the cross-hairs for our next big adventure, just another campaign along the road to global domination. We are seeing now just how important a single election can be! There are still legal means to fix a bad result but only if we respond before too much permanent damage has been done. The clock is ticking and it’s four minutes to midnight.
