In a massive pre-election embarrassment for the Bush administration, nearly 350 tons of lethal explosives - which could be used to trigger nuclear weapons - have vanished from a military facility in Iraq supposed to have been guarded by US troops.
Hardly had the disappearance come to light than John Kerry, the Democratic presidential challenger, seized on the episode as proof that George Bush was incapable of keeping America safe. The material could (…)

Exclusive: By James Cusick Westminster Editor and David Pratt Foreign Editor
Coalition claims that Iraq may still be able to hold elections in January are seriously undermined by secret intelligence material passed to the Sunday Herald which reveals the full extent of the resistance in the country.
Far from a limited number of pro-Saddam resistance groups fighting coalition forces, well-funded cells and militias representing a spectrum of Islamic groups are now spread across Iraq.
They (…) -
Protesters Pay Tribute to Fallen Troops
25 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentWASHINGTON - A small group of war protesters paid tribute to the troops who died in Iraq by setting up more than 1,100 flag-draped cardboard coffins in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
The coffins stretched halfway down each side of the reflecting pool. At 1 p.m., members of the Iraq War Memorial Coalition read the names of the people who were killed and then played taps.
Pat Elder, who helped organize the event, said the 75-member coalition was formed two weeks ago by people (…) -

By Josh White
The military police soldiers who ran the high-security wing of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq kept an unofficial log of their daily activities, a diary of sorts that documents the conditions that gripped the prison during the months that detainees were abused in what would later erupt into an international scandal.
From Oct. 19, 2003, to Jan. 18, 2004 — just days after digital photographs of soldiers mistreating prisoners were turned in to Army criminal investigators the (…) -

Also, a State Department security officer was killed during a mortar or rocket attack at a U.S. base near the Baghdad airport.
The nature of the attack on the soldiers (…) -
Israel bides its time on Iran
25 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
By Harinder Mishra
JERUSALEM - While Israel is at daggers drawn with Iran, its preoccupation with its daunting domestic concerns that are tearing apart the Jewish population and the non-conducive international environment are likely to deter it from the earlier posturing of carrying out a preemptive strike to foil the Islamic Republic’s nuclear ambitions.
The indications here suggest that Jerusalem instead would prefer sticking to its already-launched diplomatic initiatives that it sees (…) -

The inside story of the Army platoon that refused to carry out a "death sentence" mission.
By Mary Jacoby
The e-mail arrived Tuesday evening. But Kathy Harris didn’t see the urgent plea from her son, Spc. Aaron Gordon, 20, until she arrived at work Wednesday morning. By then, Gordon and 16 other members of his Army Reserve platoon were corralled in a tent in Tallil, Iraq, under armed guard, for refusing to drive a fuel supply convoy in what another of the detained soldiers would later (…) -

25 October 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
By ERIK ECKHOLM
Managers of a security firm that won large contracts in Iraq warned their bosses in February of what they called a pattern of fraudulent billing practices, internal company memorandums suggest.
The memorandums, written primarily by two company managers, charged that the security firm, Custer Battles, repeatedly billed the occupation authorities for nonexistent services or at grossly inflated prices.
The company, which quickly grew to garner security contracts worth $100 (…) -

TEHRAN - The month of November in a US presidential-election year is not supposed to be particularly eventful, but this year may be an exception, in the light of the gathering storm over Iran’s nuclear program, due to be reviewed by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in late November. November is also important because of the Egypt summit on the future of Iraq, bringing the Group of Eight (G8) industrialized countries (…) -

A respectable lady went into a Bordeaux supermarket and stuck labels on dates which had come from the "State of Israel", on which it was pointed out that the state of origin of the fruit was founded on racist principles and asking customers to boycott anything coming from there. This strategy was well-known and popularly supported by people protesting against the apartheid of the former South African régime.
The Manager of the supermarket called the Police and the lady (…)
