Patronage problems? Just call the FBI

There’s not a great deal of confidence in the Federal Emergency Management Agency now that Florida gets ready to clean up after another hurricane. FEMA continues to be attacked for cronyism.
This is unfair criticism. Cronyism is putting your friends into jobs for which they are patently unqualified. President George Bush did not hang out with his FEMA appointees — and certainly does not do so (…)

Gay Ghettos Are In Transition
29 September 2005by Wayne Besen
If only the coffee shop Big Cup had changed its name to the Luxurious Latte it might have survived. Instead, the cornerstone of New York’s gay Chelsea neighborhood closed shop earlier this month after the landlord raised the rent from $16,500 to $21,500. The downfall of the Big Cup is indicative of dramatic changes taking place in gayborhoods across America, where artists are pushed out, as art dealers move in.

Union leader accuses Mbeki of betrayal over Aids
29 September 2005By Basildon Peta, in Johannesburg
South Africa’s senior labour leader has launched a scathing attack on President Thabo Mbeki, accusing him of "a failure of leadership" in dealing with the HIV/Aids pandemic which is wreaking havoc in Africa’s richest country.
South Africa has the world’s biggest number of people who have HIV/Aids, with more than five million of its 45 million citizens affected. Mr Mbeki’s remarks five years ago that poverty, not HIV, was the real cause of Aids earned him (…) -
Katrina Takes a Toll on Truth, News Accuracy
29 September 2005Rumors supplanted accurate information and media magnified the problem. Rapes, violence and estimates of the dead were wrong.
By Susannah Rosenblatt and James Rainey
BATON ROUGE, La. - Maj. Ed Bush recalled how he stood in the bed of a pickup truck in the days after Hurricane Katrina, struggling to help the crowd outside the Louisiana Superdome separate fact from fiction. Armed only with a megaphone and scant information, he might have been shouting into, well, a hurricane.
The (…) -
America Needs a New Direction: Good jobs. Stronger Communities. A just economy
29 September 2005AFL-CIO Executive Committee Statement
The devastation caused by hurricane Katrina has led millions of Americans to open our hearts to the helpless victims of the Gulf Coast communities. Donations by the millions have poured in. Volunteers by the thousands have rushed to disaster sites to help with rescue work and reconstruction. And the unions and union members of our country have been among those who have given generously.
AFL-CIO unions have already pledged more than $10 million (…) -
The buck stops with Lynndie
29 September 2005By Derrick Z. Jackson
LYNNDIE ENGLAND is convicted. Donald Rumsfeld cackles. England, the 22-year-old private, was found guilty as prosecutors convinced an all-male Army jury that she bore full responsibility for ’’her own sick humor" in the infamous photographs of her at Abu Ghraib holding a naked prisoner on a leash and smiling as she pointed at a prisoner’s genitals.
Defense lawyers depicted England as a depressed reservist, a mere file clerk who was compliant to authority and easy to (…) -

CINDY SHEEHAN MEETS JOHN McCAIN
28 September 2005By Peter Fredson
Cindy Sheehan has aroused several hundred conservative bloggers, all determined to Swiftboat her in very strong terms. It seems that she met with Senator John McCain, and later called him a “war-monger.” This, to a loyal Bush supporter is intolerable.
She and several supporters met with John McCain. She said that McCain simply told the group what George Bush might have said, and that she didn’t believe his answers to her questions. She stated: “He is a warmonger, and (…) -
Martial Law: Police State America - We’re So Close Now Thanks to Hurricane Katrina
28 September 2005For years we have warned that the police state is coming, how Martial Law will become the norm, how ancient laws, rights and freedoms are being overturned and replaced with repressive mechanisms of control.
For years we have presented the evidence, the Army War College documents, the domestic military takeover drills, the draconian legislation, officials left right and centre calling for more centralized military control domestically.
For years people refuted the evidence, or passed it (…)
