The great open secret of American political stability is the way the two-party system works to insulate the ruling class from the consequences of its disastrous policies. When one party dedicated to carrying out the big business and imperial agenda falls out of favor with the voters, there’s always the other one, waiting in the wings with predictable policies, ready to take over. In this way, American voters get to "throw the bums out," while at the same time replacing them (…)

Study predicts Arctic ice melt by 2100
4 November 2004by WWF
A new scientific study says the Arctic ice cover will disappear in summer by the end of this century unless carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced.
The study, to be released next week, says the Arctic ice melt will cause sea levels to rise and could lead to the extinction of some species such as polar bears.
"The melt has begun," said Jennifer Morgan, director of the Climate Change Campaign for the environmental organisation WWF, which published excerpts of the (…) -
Election Reactions from Germany : "Our Values Systems are Separating"
4 November 2004George Bush has been re-elected. Leading German foreign policy experts tell SPIEGEL INTERNATIONAL what the outcome means for transatlantic relations.
Even before Kerry’s Wednesday concession, politicians and thinkers in Germany were at work strategizing the future of foreign relations with the world’s only superpower.
A number of serious issues divide Germany and the United States — from the go-it-alone attitude of incumbent President George W. Bush to the Iraq war to Washington’s (…) -
Drumbeat Windows:
4 November 2004The rain falls striking windows, I can hear it drumming behind me, The sky is black nighted the color of lightless clouds, There is nothing in my eyes save a candlelit prayer, Something held cherished in memory, I am in constant effort to see, Anything alive in these drumbeat windows.

George Bush won the popular vote- and pigs are flying
4 November 2004There is no possible way that Dubya won the popular vote- it simply isn’t true. Consider this quote from a poster on democraticunderground.com, "I know dozens of 2000 Bush voters that are voting for Kerry this time, and none that have switched the other way." This pretty much sums it up, 2000 the race was a dead heat, and now after four years of the Bush nightmare we’re supposed to believe he has even more support? I don’t buy it, sure some people are in denial about how bad Bush really (…)

Question For The Legalites:
4 November 2004On a day like this conspiracy theories come far too easily to mind. I still don’t trust computers much.
I guess the question is, what next? I’m half wondering, if Kerry won’t challenge these election results, is there any way we the people could organize effectively enough to challenge the results of the last two elections in court? Or do we just eat it and roll over in a screaming fit of protests that get nothing real done but let us vent?
Any lawyers on the list see any hope of taking (…) -
Some Thoughts For Braggarts...
4 November 2004Half of us in the USA were allowed to and quite a few million more wanted to vote for something different. With the electronic voting machines made by Republicans and the Republicans throwing Democratic voter registrations in the trash and going all out to invalidate Democratic voter registrations from the polls, millions were disenfranchised by the party of crooks and cheats and lies. I hope the rest of the world will remember those simple facts.
There is not any such thing as a clear (…) -
Thinking of Emigration...
3 November 2004...anyone thinking of emigrating, please make sure wherever you go is at least 400 feet above sea level - otherwise you may find yourself swimming in a few years considering the powers that still be.
What a cold, dark, heartless day this has become.

Kerry ’concedes defeat’
3 November 2004WASHINGTON
President George Bush has won a second term as US president after the Democratic
challenger, John Kerry, today called him to concede defeat in the bitterly-contested
race for the White House, the Associated Press has reported.
Mr Bush has won a mandate to govern a divided and anxious nation, his promise
of steady, strong wartime leadership trumping Mr Kerry’s fresh-start approach
to Iraq and joblessness.
After a long, tense night of vote counting, Mr Kerry called Mr (…)
