Lost in the debate over health care and in between Sarah Palin’s speeches and right about the time the thriller stopped thrilling was Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announcing a “Temporary” expansion of the Army by 22,000 men. This temporary expansion is designed to take the strain off the Army. The Army has been growing all along and had reached 547,000 before this latest announcement. Some don’t think that 22,000 are enough; Senator Joe Lieberman issued a position (…)

THE CRASH OF 2009: A WASTED OPPORTUNITY
5 August 2009JAZZMAN CHRONICLES. DISSEMINATE FREELY.
It was the Great Depression that made the New Deal possible. Without it we would be a different nation. We may never have passed Social Security or Medicare. We may never have built the highways and bridges that are a legacy of public works. We might never have ensured the right to organized labor or passed legislation to protect workers and secure unemployment benefits. We may never have established regulatory limits on the size and conduct of (…) -
The Great American Bubble Machine

Global Research, August 4, 2009 Rollingstone.com
From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they’re about to do it again
The first thing you need to know about Goldman Sachs is that it’s everywhere. The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money. In fact, (…) -

It is a major embarrassment to Alistair Darling and City minister Lord Myners who had (…) -

Judges say UK spy visited Morocco 3 times while ex-Guantanamo detainee was held there
2 August 2009A British intelligence officer repeatedly visited Morocco at the same time that a former UK resident was allegedly being tortured there, two senior judges said Friday. Supporters of Binyam Mohamed say the revelation casts doubt on the position of the UK spy agency, which insists it never knew he was being detained by Moroccan authorities. Mohamed, an Ethiopian who moved to Britain as a teenager, was arrested in 2002 in Pakistan.
He alleges he was subjected to sleep deprivation and had his (…) -
The Gate Keepers of Death
2 August 2009By David Glenn Cox
There are several reasons that I believe we won’t get adequate healthcare reform. The first reason is that we don’t really deserve it. We let the political class ride unicycles and juggle bowling pins, anything to amuse the cows. Then we let the media and special interest lobbying groups tell us what’s good for us and what’s bad for us. We rail against what we don’t like and mumble about what we do want, and since the bulk of us are healthy it is just a quiet murmur (…) -

Editor’s note: Col. Timothy R. Reese is a senior U.S. military adviser to the Iraqis in Baghdad, at the flash point of the transition of power. Reese penned the memo below, which challenges the timetable championed by President Obama and Gen. Ray Odierno, the senior American commander in Iraq. Leaked text by way of the New York Times.
As the old saying goes, “guests, like fish, begin (…) -
Why Morocco is Proposing Autonomy Now?
31 July 2009By Chasli
Just a few observations about why I am so skeptical about Morocco’s autonomy plan and what I see as Morocco’s reasons for going down the autonomy road.
Anyone who thinks that Morocco would ever allow the Sahrawi to control any of the territory’s mineral or fishing wealth is seriously suffering from “head-in-the-sand” syndrome. It just won’t happen. The Moroccan military, elite, and monarchy have been happily stealing Western Sahara’s abundant resources for over thirty years (…) -

31 July 2009On Thursday, July 30, 2009, advocates for a Single Payer Healthcare system (Medicare Expanded for All) stormed Capitol HIll, in Washington, D.C. This date marks the 44th birthday of the Medicare program. Taxis circled Capitol Hill with “Single Payer” signs hanging from their windows; cup cakes and birthday cards were delivered by activists to each Congressional office; and rousing speech making took place at the Upper Senate Park, just south of the U.S. Capitol.
One of the speakers at the (…)
