How Democracy Works: Democratic Deceit and Denial on War, Impeachment, Health Care and Prisons
by Bruce Dixon
Most Americans, and most Democrats want an end to war. Most Americans favor impeachment, and when alternatives are described to them, most favor a single-payer health care system on the French or Canadian model. When Republicans captured the House and Senate in the third year of Bill Clinton’s administration the (…)

Sheehan Arrested in Impeachment Protest
24 July 2007Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Monday at the Capitol for disorderly conduct, shortly after saying she would run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the California Democrat’s refusal to try to impeach President Bush.
Sheehan was taken into custody inside Rep. John Conyers’ office, where she had spent an hour imploring him to launch impeachment proceedings against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Conyers, D-Mich., chairs the House Judiciary Committee, where any (…) -
Operation FALCON - The USA is turning into a Police State
23 July 2007Operation FALCON - The USA is turning into a Police State
Mike Whitney
On 29th June, 1934, Chancellor Adolph Hitler, accompanied by the Schutzstaffel (SS), arrived at Wiesse, where he personally arrested the leader of the Strum Abteilung (SA), Ernnst Roehm. During the next 24 hours 200 other senior SA officers were arrested on the way to Wiesse. Many were shot as soon as they were captured but Hitler decided to pardon Roehm because of his past service to the movement. However, after much (…) -
Debushification
23 July 2007July 20th is a holiday of sorts in Germany, a day of remembrance of the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This is not a Fourth of July type of holiday it is more akin to Veterans Day, a day of reflection and atonement. These weren’t George Washington or Thomas Jefferson type heroes but they were patriot’s still.
The plotters were all Nazi party members and quite content with the functions of the Nazi party during the good times. But this was 1944 Stalingrade had turned the tide on the (…) -
Blind At The Holy See
23 July 2007by Wayne Besen
In the wake of sex scandals involving children, the Roman Catholic Church should either change its mores or close its doors. Since 1950, the United States arm of the church has paid an astounding $2 billion to settle claims of childhood sexual abuse. Yes, that is billions with a capital "B" that could have gone towards raising orphans, housing the homeless and feeding the "foodless." Instead, the church has had to reach deep inside its pockets, because some priests can’t (…) -
Overcoming the conspiracy against Palestine
23 July 2007by Ali Abunimah
"Be certain that Yasser Arafat’s final days are numbered, but allow us to finish him off our way, not yours. And be sure as well that ... the promises I made in front of President Bush, I will give my life to keep." Those words were written by the Fatah warlord Mohammed Dahlan, whose US- and Israeli-backed forces were routed by Hamas in the Gaza Strip last month, in a 13 July 2003 letter to then Israeli defense minister Shaul Mofaz and published on Hamas’ website on 4 July (…) -
Global Warming and Agriculture: Impact Estimates by Country
22 July 2007...while there is growing recognition that global warming is a problem, little attention has been paid to the likely impact at the country level, especially in the developing world. In this new book, William Cline, a joint senior fellow at CGD and the Peterson Institute for International Economics, provides the first ever estimates of the impact on agriculture by country, with a particular focus on social and economic implications in China, India, Brazil, and the poor countries of the (…)

WHAT WAS UP THE BUSH BUTT?
22 July 2007What was up Bush’s Butt?
By Peter Fredson
July 22, 2007
President Bush just had some polyps removed from his colon. We all knew he had SOMETHING up his hind end, but thought it was a stick. Now the danger is over. Not the danger of cancer, but the danger of having Dick Cheney as President.
That would be a fate worse than death to our nation. While we are not content with Bush as President, yet the thought that Dick Cheney would be given the keys to the nuclear briefcase staggers (…) -
Fear and fury in shadow of Japan’s damaged nuclear giant
22 July 2007By David McNeill in Kashiwazaki
Published: 21 July 2007
One wonders what the pitch was: building the planet’s largest nuclear power plant on one of its most seismically unstable plots of real estate.
Yet, somehow here the plant squats on the outskirts of this town of 93,000 people, a seven-reactor, 8,200 megawatt monster, ringed by roads that are cracked and buckled from this week’s deadly earthquake.
Inside, in the seconds after the quake - which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale (…) -
What A Nice Man
20 July 2007My mother told me when I was a little boy, good character could never be taken away by others that only I alone could damage or destroy it. Mother was right of course, mothers always are about such things as this. She should know she was raised by a giant of a man all five foot six of him. Her mother died when she was nine leaving my uncle to raise her and five other brothers and sisters.
He was sixteen and it was 1935 so he quit school and worked odd jobs and promised his siblings he (…)
