WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A FAILURE?
By Peter Fredson
June 6, 2006
I watch the Bush administration bellow and bluster its incompetence to the world. I watch as the cabinet dances war dances, shouts ominous threats, pronounces rivals to be EVIL and therefore unfit to live with decent Christian Republicans.
I listen to little Condi Rice, the Black Angel of Death; scare the public once more with visions of mushroom clouds, aluminum tubes, yellow cake and other strategic lies. But Donald (…)

LEFT LETTERS: The Good News From Haditha
6 June 2006by David McReynolds
Good news? Yes, of a sort. It is good news that Time magazine, which of late has taken a Wall Street Journal turn with its choice of columnists, broke the story. Strange, of course, that a massacre that took place last November only made the big news here in May. But not so strange. My Lai, which involved the slaughter of hundreds of Vietnamese, took place in 1968 but wasn’t revealed until 1969.
It is good news that Americans have been forced, at last, to see the Iraq (…) -

The money gathered will be sent to local people’s organizations who have mobilized themselves in the municipality of Klaten where the districts of (…) -
Green Fuel’s Dirty Secret
6 June 2006by Sasha Lilley
The town of Columbus, Nebraska, bills itself as a "City of Power and Progress." If Archer Daniels Midland gets its way, that power will be partially generated by coal, one of the dirtiest forms of energy. When burned, it emits carcinogenic pollutants and high levels of the greenhouse gases linked to global warming.
Ironically this coal will be used to generate ethanol, a plant-based petroleum substitute that has been hyped by both environmentalists and President George (…) -
CALL TO RESISTANCE!
6 June 2006EUROPEAN COORDINATION AGAINST PRECARIOUSNESS: STRASBURG, JUNE 9th-10th-11th
For decades, a fierce neo-liberal policy has done its work all over Europe. We - as well as the environment around us - endure, everyday, the effects of this alienating system. This logic finds expression in all-out industrialism, everlasting perpetuation of established elites and ideological formatting, relayed by mass-media, governments and omnipresent aggressive advertising.
Economy has become the sole (…) -

Degrees of Separation, the Numbers Game, and How to Bring Peace to the World
To bring peace to the world we must first understand the consequences of war, specifically how many people it affects. The calculations required to truly understand the number of people that are directly affected by war are quite simple. To get a ballpark estimate, all we have to (…) -
10 Reasons to Impeach George W. Bush...And a Reason Why Democratic Leaders are Wrong to be Afraid
5 June 2006As prospects grow for a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives, and perhaps even the Senate, this November, the idea of impeachment is gaining attention. Yet even as polls show increasing numbers of Americans supporting the idea of removing Bush from office before the end of his term, Democratic Party leaders keep backing away.
This is not simply bad politics. It is cowardly, wrong and dangerous.
Let’s look at the facts.
President Bush has committed grave offenses against (…) -
US blocking international deal on fighting Aids
5 June 2006– Britain distances itself from Bush administration Negotiators try to salvage package at UN summit
by Ewen MacAskill
The Bush administration, heavily influence by the Christian right, is blocking key proposals for a new United Nations package to combat Aids worldwide over the next five years because of its opposition to the distribution of condoms and needle exchanges and references to prostitutes, drug addicts and homosexuals.
The United States is being supported by many Muslim (…) -
Absalom, O Absalom: ’Not for inciting hatred, but for learning lessons from history’
5 June 2006by Jerry Saltz
The irony couldn’t be sharper, the justice more poetic: What America calls "the Vietnam War," Vietnam calls "the American War." Perhaps the Iraq war will be one day be called "the American War" as well. For his powerful, almost anonymous outing at White Columns, Portland-based Harrell Fletcher, a quiet strong point in the 2004 Whitney Biennial with his video project of a group of mechanics and their customers reading snippets of James Joyce’s Ulysses, has installed 90 images (…)
