August Wilson, the country’s preeminent African-American playwright, died yesterday at the age of 60 from liver cancer.
Mr. Wilson’s main body of work was a cycle of 10 plays, each set in a different decade in the 20th century, thus covering 100 years of African-American history and attitudes. They featured large ensembles of black actors playing characters debating how to carry themselves in the face of limited opportunities and resources. Although white racism was rarely (…)

William Bennett, Republican hack politician, former Reagan administration Education Secretary, Director of Drug Control policy under George Bush the First, author of “The Book of Virtues” and someone who lost 8 million dollars on high-stakes gambling is back defending his party’s anti-abortion stance. He informed his radio program audience that if we aborted all black babies then the crime rate would reduce drastically.
On his radio show Bennett told a caller, "If you (…) -

If only the coffee shop Big Cup had changed its name to the Luxurious Latte it might have survived. Instead, the cornerstone of New York’s gay Chelsea neighborhood closed shop earlier this month after the landlord raised the rent from $16,500 to $21,500. The downfall of the Big Cup is indicative of dramatic changes taking place in gayborhoods across America, where artists are pushed out, as art dealers move in.
From San Francisco’s Castro District to Provincetown, the hard (…) -

2 commentsBy Rev. Ted Pike 6-29-5 The Anti-Defamation League’s new, tougher hate bill, "The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005," HR 2662, if passed, will very soon end FREE SPEECH and FREE SPEECH TALK RADIO. The ADL, through similar legislation, has already ended free speech in Canada. It wants to do the same in America. Here’s a summary of how this bill would make law. HR 2662 intends to enforce nation-wide the working ADL/federal definition that ’hate’ equals bias (…)

On Sept. 14, the US House of Representatives passed, 223-199, the ominous federal “anti-hate” bill, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005. It was inserted as AMDT.2662 into the Children’s Safety Act. If approved unaltered by the senate judiciary, this legislation is ready for the President to sign into law.
Here is a summary of what the bill would make law:
Although AMDT.2662 ostensibly empowers the government to assist states in prosecution of (…) -

1968. There was never a year when the worlds of sports and politics collided so breathlessly, without mercy or respite. It was the year Muhammad Ali, stripped of his heavyweight title for resisting the draft, spoke on 200 college campuses and asked the question, “Can they take my title without me being whupped?” It was the year Bill Russell’s Boston Celtics became champions once again, yet the player-coach saw his house vandalized by bigots. This led Russell to call the city (…) -

"In Cuba, when they know a hurricane is coming, chickens, hens and people are all evacuated," Chavez said in an interview with The Washington Post and Newsweek magazine, stepping up his rhetoric against the US government.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 09/25/05 — George W. Bush and his religious Right administration decided Wednesday to waive all financial sanctions against Saudi Arabia-Washington’s closest Arab ally in the war on terrorism and a major owner of the United States-for failing to do enough to stop the slave trade in prostitutes, child sex workers and forced laborers. Go figure.

Sports stars are generally known more for their narcissism than their compassion, but in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, athletes have expressed a tremendous amount of altruism and anguish over the amount of human suffering the storm has caused. That’s not surprising, when you consider that more than 100 professional athletes come from the Gulf Coast, an area whose deep poverty, institutionalized racism and year-round sunshine combine to offer the requisite conditions for (…)
