Speaking on May 15 in Baghdad, Condoleezza Rice made an outrageous statement: "You see, this war came to us, not the other way around." Could there be anyone left in the U.S., let alone the Middle East, who believes this bald-faced lie?

The truth has trickled out slowly — the truth so sickening that none of us want to believe it. But it’s finally out: The Bush administration, from its very first weeks in office, planned a military operation to overthrow Saddam Hussein. The "Downing Street memo" and other documents released in Britain recently prove beyond any doubt that Bush, at the ranch in Texas in April 2002, lassoed Blair into going along with a war against Iraq.

The Brits fussed about the legality of it, since they knew Saddam posed no imminent threat. They insisted on creating some "cover." The two governments would demand U.N. inspections, they would use stepped-up bombing runs, whatever it took — to create a provocation, an "incident" to justify war. These revelations corroborate what Richard Clarke and Paul O’Neill told us long months ago: that Bush was fixated on Saddam, even to the point of ignoring the warnings about planned al-Qaida attacks on the U.S.

If these actions do not constitute "high crimes and misdemeanors," I wonder what does? Bush, Cheney and the neo-cons — most of them deep into the oil and defense industries — ran roughshod over the Constitution and the American people. They have sacrificed 1,700 young American lives and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives in their misbegotten "crusade."

At last, Congress is beginning to wake up. Let’s write our senators and representatives and tell them we demand to know the truth about this disastrous war and set a timetable to bring the troops home.

Local representatives deaf to dissenting opinions

One of them won’t admit he made a mistake by lying and pushing us into Iraq. He won’t admit he made a mistake by giving the rich a tax cut and won’t admit he made a fool of himself by flying back from a Crawford, Texas, vacation to sign a bill to save a dead person’s life.

The other one won’t let the Schiavo case go and wants an investigation to see if Michael Schiavo deliberately wanted to kill his wife.

Schiavo took nurses’ training to take care of her. Only after he was sure she wasn’t going to get well did he want to remove her feeding tube!

I was born and spent my childhood in poverty. I am not complaining. I am proud of it because I know how to admit it when I make mistakes, and I make many!

Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about his sex life, but he only hurt himself. Why aren’t there more people saying let’s impeach Bush for lying and destroying our military and our country?

I have always encouraged our young people, men and women, to join the military to defend our country and the Bill of Rights, but not to become an aggressor and invade a sovereign nation that has done nothing to us.

A Truth letter writer on June 21 ("Documents show the fix was in," People’s Forum) asked us to write our senators and representatives and demand to know about this disastrous war. I would do that but my representative, Mark Souder, and I believe Chris Chocola would support Bush and his war until hell freezes over or when we have an opportunity to kick them out of office — the first Tuesday in November 2006.

I hope my representatives will read my letter and will prove me wrong. I will quickly apologize to them!
