Russian President Vladimir Putin is so fed up with being grilled over his handling of the Beslan catastrophe that he lashed out at foreign journalists on Monday. "Why don’t you meet Osama bin Laden, invite him to Brussels or to the White House and engage in talks," he demanded. "No one has a moral right to tell us to talk to child-killers."
Mr. Putin is not a man who likes to be second-guessed. Fortunately for him, there is still one place where he is shielded from all the (…)

Three Years Later: Peaceful Tomorrows 9/11/04 Statement
11 September 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
Nearly three years ago, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows was born out of a shared belief that America’s military response to the 9/11 attacks which took our loved ones’ lives would result in the deaths of countless innocent civilians and increase recruitment for terrorist causes, making the United States, and the world, less safe and less free for generations to come.
Today, as we commemorate September 11, 2004, we find that our worst fears have been realized. The terrorism (…) -
100 Children Die Daily in Iraq
10 September 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentIn one month, 3000 children died in Iraq; on average, that is 100 per day. Though
many are innocent victims of incessant clashes, most succumb to malnourishment
and unsanitary living conditions.
The shortage of drugs and modern equipment is worse than when Saddam Hussein
was in power - when international embargoes isolated the country.
Shells and shrapnel, grenades and bombs are other factors affecting the health of children. According to disclosures from the Health Care Ministry, (…) -

We, the Italian peace movement, we who are the brothers and sisters of Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, peaceworkers in Iraq, ask those who are holding them and their two Iraqi co-workers, Ra’ad Ali Abdul-Aziz and Mahnaz Bassam, to release them immediately. We beg you to consider the untold damage your actions are inflicting on the (…) -

3 commentsBeslan was barbaric - so has been Russia’s reign of terror in Chechnya
by Ahmed Zakaev
The bloody denouement to the Beslan tragedy was barbaric: no other word will suffice. There could never be any justification for terrorists who we are told shot fleeing hostages in the back - nor for those who died at the hands of the ill-judged Spetsnaz operation. I have been asked many times about Chechen involvement in this appalling bloodbath. Of course there can be no denying the direct link (…) -
The Prison at Guatanamo: What the World Should Know
6 September 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
by DOUGLAS VALENTINE
The new book Guantanamo: What The World Should Know is an interview between author/editor Ellen Ray, and Michael Ratner, an eloquent human rights attorney and president of the Center for Constitutional Rights. Mr Ratner and his colleagues at the CCR have the distinction of being the first Americans to mount a legal challenge of the Kafkaesque detention and interrogation facilities the Bush Administration uses at the US military base in Guantanamo, Cuba, to incarcerate (…) -
Uri Avnery: How Are You, Non-Violence?
6 September 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
by Uri Avnery*
At the mass meeting with Arun Gandhi, the grandson of the Mahatma, in Abu-Dis, I observed the faces of the participants. While Gandhi was preaching non-violence, I imagined a debate between two young Palestinians in the audience.
Yussuf: “He is right. The armed intifada has failed.
Hassan: “On the contrary. Without the actions of the martyrs, the world would have forgotten us long ago.”
Yussuf: “For half a year there were no suicide attacks in Israel, and look what we (…) -
Why Democrats shouldn’t be scared

NEW YORK - If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a hundred times from discouraged Democrats and liberals as the Republican convention here wrapped up this week. Their shoulders hunched, their eyes at a droop, they lower their voice to a whisper hoping that if they don’t say it too loud it may not come true: "I...I...I think Bush is going to win."
Clearly, they’re watching too much TV. Too much of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Zell Miller, Dick Cheney and Rudy Giuliani. Too much (…) -
Russia School Standoff Ends With 200 Dead

The three-day hostage siege at a school in southern Russia
ended in chaos and bloodshed Friday, after witnesses said Chechen militants set
off bombs and Russian commandos stormed the building. Hostages fled in terror,
many of them children who were half-naked and covered in blood. Officials estimated
the death toll at more than 200.
Early Saturday, 531 people remained hospitalized, including 283 children - 92
of the youngsters in ``very grave’’ condition, health (…) -
Don’t send more kids to die

Tonight, it’s show time for George W. Bush, and I can’t wait to hear what he has to tell the Republican convention.
It has been a pretty thrilling week so far, my favorite moment by far being the rebellious Bush twins who, in just a few short minutes, delivered on their promise to issue "payback" to their parents and all authority in general.
They revealed their parents’ pet name for each other: "Bushie" or "Bushy" - no spelling was provided. They seemed to have (…)
