Despite promises of over $1 billion in U.S. funding, hospital patients in Iraq continue to suffer ongoing hardship. Problems plaguing Iraqi hospitals fifteen months into what has been a brutal, bloody occupation range from ongoing medicine and equipment shortages to an overall lack of proper medical infrastructure.
"We are getting less medical supplies now than we were during the sanctions," said Dr. Namin Rashid, the Chief Resident Doctor at Yarmouk Hospital. "Paul (...) -

We posted the quiz yesterday, the day the United Nations weapons inspectors made their first report to the United Nations Security Council on their progress to date. Today we post the correct answers, correct at least according to our best sources and analysis. If you got all the answers correct, you are a certified dove. And vice versa. There is, though, some room for quibbling.
1. Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. True or False. (...) -
So this is what they call the new, ’free’ Iraq
7 July 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsBy Robert Fisk
He drafted a new piece of legislation forbidding Iraqi motorists to drive with only one hand on the wheel. Another document solemnly announced that it would henceforth be a crime for Iraqis to sound their car horns except in an emergency. That same day, three American soldiers were torn apart by a roadside bomb north of Baghdad, one of more than 60 attacks on US forces over the weekend. And all the while, Mr Bremer was worrying about the standards of Iraqi driving.
It (...) -

Good News, Bad News
After another visit to political prisoners Marcelino and Leonardo Miranda, community leaders from Montaña Verde, we returned to the office of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH). Organizers and members, including many from the two communities of Montaña Verde, were on their way back from Tegucigalpa, where they had participated in a protest in front of the Supreme Court of Honduras to demand the (...) -
Shameless in Iraq
6 July 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
By Naomi Klein
Good news out of Baghdad: the Program Management Office, which oversees the $18.4 billion in US reconstruction funds, has finally set a goal it can meet. Sure, electricity is below prewar levels, the streets are rivers of sewage and more Iraqis have been fired than hired. But now the PMO has contracted with British mercenary firm Aegis to protect its employees from "assassination, kidnapping, injury and" — get this — "embarrassment." I don’t know whether Aegis will succeed (...) -

That Unfinished Oscar Speech
By MARLON BRANDO
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — For 200 years we have said to the Indian people who are fighting for their land, their life, their families and their right to be free: ’’Lay down your arms, my friends, and then we will remain together. Only if you lay down your arms, my friends, can we then talk of peace and come to an agreement which will be good for you.’’
When they laid down their arms, we murdered them. We lied to them. (...)
