So I get this note - would I like to write an essay under the heading of ’Capitalism: Rejected’, to which I immediately added the question mark, after all, a host of countries rejected the damn thing throughout the course of the 20th century only to see their labours, their dreams shattered as capitalism launched its successful counter-revolution.
Nevertheless, what are the chances that we could, once more, reject the beast, at least within our lifetimes? This is, as far as I’m concerned, (…)

Eden Defined
Such a spectacular and magnificent entity is the planet we call Earth, a wonderment of natural beauty and symbiotic balance yet to be surpassed by the creative genius of humankind. It is a planet teeming with the colors of life, its oceans and continents gems of existence, an overabundance of beating hearts and flowing energy. The planet we call our only home is a living, breathing, dynamic cocktail of universal energy, for (…) -
The Silencing of Carlos Delgado

Sometimes sports mirrors politics with such morbid accuracy you don’t know whether to laugh, cry or hide in the basement. Just as the Bush Administration shows its commitment to democracy by operating secret offshore gulags and buying favorable news coverage in Iraq, the New York Mets have made it clear to new player Carlos Delgado that freedom of speech stops once the blue and orange uniform—their brand—is affixed to his body.
For the last two years, Delgado chose to (…) -

"The greatness of our nation was the persistent, steady struggle of people, many unnoticed and invisible, who laid the foundation by which we live today. And the struggle of the ’50s and ’60s was one of the great movements," declared Rev. James Lawson at a Nov. 11 luncheon hosted by Loyola Marymount University to honor civil rights activists.
The pastor emeritus of Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, a legendary figure in the civil rights movement, reported (…) -
The Politics of the Antiwar Movement: THE QUESTION OF INTERNATIONAL A.N.S.W.E.R.

THE SEPT. 24 ANTIWAR protest in Washington, D.C., was hailed as a revival of a movement which had become somewhat moribund even as the quagmire in Iraq deepens with horrifying rapidity. The march brought out 300,000 protesters, by organizers’ estimates, making it the largest since the start of the U.S. invasion in March 2003. After a summer in which Cindy Sheehan’s campaign to demand personal accountability from the vacationing George Bush had riveted the nation, the march (…) -

On Saturday, December 10, in London, England, leaders of the peace movement against the Iraq war from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Iraq will meet to strategize. There is hope that the tide has already turned against the occupation, and that a coordinated international effort will be able to mobilize sufficient public pressure to bring the war to a complete end.
If you can make it to London, sign up here: http://www.stopwar.org.uk
If you can’t make it, I (…) -
The Antiwar Movement Isn’t Where You Think It Is

On October 29 of this year there was an antiwar rally on Boston Common. My wife and I and our daughter and two young granddaughters took part. After a few speakers one of the rally organizers announced to loud cheers that a contingent of antiwar demonstrators had gone to join gay activists who had been since 8 a.m. two blocks away outside the Tremont Temple Baptist Church. Later many other antiwar demonstrators plus the rally sound truck reportedly joined the gay (…) -

Hollywood actors, musicians, church leaders and death penalty opponents staged protests and vigils across the US on behalf of Stanley "Tookie" Williams, founder of the Crips street gang who faces execution in less than two weeks unless the California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, can be persuaded to grant him clemency.
The outpouring of support for "International Save Tookie Day" yesterday underlined the controversy surrounding Williams’s death sentence (…) -

Ordinance Limits Parking, Camping
By Rosalind S. Helderman
CRAWFORD, Tex., - About a dozen antiwar protesters, including Daniel Ellsberg and the sister of Cindy Sheehan, were arrested Wednesday morning while camping on a roadside near President Bush’s ranch in violation of a new county ordinance.
The group returned this week as Bush arrived at his Texas home to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family. They came in hopes of reigniting the international attention they attracted in August, (…) -
