1 commentBush’s Assault On Freedom: What’s To Stop Him? By Paul Craig Roberts July 3, 2006
On June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-3 decision ruled that President Bush’s effort to railroad tortured Guantanamo Bay detainees in kangaroo courts "violates both U.S. law and the Geneva Conventions."
Better late than never, but it sure took a long time for the checks and balances to call a halt to the illegal and unconstitutional behavior of the executive.
The Legal Times quotes David Remes, a (…) -

1 commentThe High Price Of American Gullibility Watch Us, Wiretap Us, Search Us, Jail Us ... By Paul Craig Roberts July 2, 2006 What explains the gullibility of Americans, a gullibility that has mired the US in disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and which promises war with Iran, North Korea and a variety of other targets if neoconservatives continue to have their way? Part of the explanation is that millions of conservatives are thrilled at the opportunity to display their patriotism and to (…)

4 commentsHow Bush Breaks The Ten Commandments By Brooke Allen and Patrick Doyle, TheNation.com Posted on July 3, 2006, Printed on July 3, 2006 The Bush presidency is the most overtly religious in living memory, probably in all of American history. The President has stated his belief that he has been called by God and acts as if Americans are God’s new chosen people, successors to the ancient Israelites.
Some evangelical Christians claim to base their moral code on Mosaic law, and last year the (…) -
Law? What Law?
3 July 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
In all the consideration given to the issue of drug use and abuse within our society there is surely one question that is missing. What exactly are the laws for? If they are designed to protect a simple people from themselves then any trip to a club, town centre, suburban housing estate or shopping centre will prove their failure. And yet, one would suspect that, if challenged, your local politician would cite exactly that reason - i.e. these drugs are dangerous and evil and you need (…)

The Bush administration must wonder these days if it has a Rodney Dangerfield problem. No matter what it does, it can’t seem to get any respect. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has engineered a broad shift in American diplomacy over the last year, moving policy toward greater multilateralism, cooperation and common sense on Iran, North Korea and Iraq, and several other issues. And yet it hasn’t produced a change in (…) -

Banning Books On Cuba Is Idiotic By Leonard Pitts 7/1/2006
The other day, I gave two teachers I know $300,000 apiece. Hypothetical money, that is. If $300,000 fell out of the sky, I said, and you could use it to improve your school, how would you spend it? Mary Ann, who works at an elementary school in Los Angeles, wanted to hire classroom aides to work one-on-one with "troublesome students who have not been properly diagnosed so they can be educated and not just written off."
Sonya, (…)
