Blinded By Democracy Georgie Anne Geyer February 01, 2006 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s frank words after the gigantic Hamas electoral victory in Gaza last weekend should be engraved in bronze in a prominently displayed plaque in the lobby of the State Department. No, I take that back. Identical plaques should be hung in the lobby of the Pentagon, over the secretary of Defense’s desk, at the entrance to the Oval Office in the White House and in the vice (…)

The End Of The Internet
4 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentThe End Of The Internet By Jeff Chester [Posted Online on February 1, 2006]
The nation’s largest telephone and cable companies are crafting an alarming set of strategies that would transform the free, open and nondiscriminatory Internet of today to a privately run and branded service that would charge a fee for virtually everything we do online.
Verizon, Comcast, Bell South and other communications giants are developing strategies that would track and store information on our every move (…) -
The NSA spying is illegal!
4 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentDear Members of Congress:
We are scholars of constitutional law and former government officials. We write in our individual capacities as citizens concerned by the Bush Administration’s National Security Agency domestic spying program, as reported in the New York Times, and in particular to respond to the Justice Department’s December 22, 2005 letter to the majority and minority leaders of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees setting forth the administration’s defense of the (…) -

3 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentHi All, Even though this story appeared two weeks ago, it has been censored by the M.S.M. and even DemocracyNow!
I called D.N! twice and spoke to Tomiko. She said they had passed on the info. to the producers and maybe they would run it...but so far, NOTHING!
I even called N.P.R. and spoke with the ombudsman, but, still NOTHING!
So if we could ALL call, well then maybe they’d run it...so.

Thanks to all at D.U. for being here! (…) -
The King That Was A Queen
2 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentby Wayne Besen
Coretta Scott King was a wonderful soul of love and empathy who will be mourned by millions of people. She was the King who was a queen, because she understood her husband’s "dream" was much greater than achieving liberty for one narrow slice of the population.
"For many years now, I have been an outspoken supporter of civil and human rights for gay and lesbian people," Coretta Scott King said at the 25th anniversary luncheon for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. (…) -
Our Union In A State Of Great Peril: Spying on Americans is illegal, unjustified, a gross abuse
1 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
WASHINGTON - January 31 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement on the President’s State of the Union address:
"Don’t be fooled by the President’s rosy rhetoric, as is most often the case with this Administration, the President’s rhetoric does not match reality. The truth is our union is in a state of great peril. This Administration is conducting a war with no end in Iraq, illegally spying on Americans at home, overseeing an economy that is increasingly (…) -
Left’s Chorus Grows for Bush Impeachment
1 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentWASHINGTON - As President Bush prepared to address Congress, some members of the House began calling for his impeachment - a call that has been growing over the last few months, when only the far fringes of the American left called for his ouster.
On Tuesday, eight-term California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters said the president should be impeached for authorizing the warrantless surveillance of some Americans through the National Security Agency.
"If a president’s untruthfulness about (…) -
Law Students Turn Backs On Alberto Gonzales & Say No To Bush Spying
1 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsFuture American lawyers to be proud of
Alberto Gonzales spoke before law students at Georgetown today, justifying illegal, unauthorized surveilance of US citizens, but during the course of his speech the students in class did something pretty ballsy and brave. They got up from their seats and turned their backs to him.
To make matters worse for Gonzales, additional students came into the room, wearing black cowls and carrying a simple banner, written on a sheet.
Fortunately for him, it (…) -
Why can’t we have America back? Why is that so hard to do, Lady Liberty?"
1 February 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
de Mary MacElveen
A small boy visits the Statue of Liberty while on a class trip. The weather is perfect with not a cloud in the sky. This child looks up to Lady Liberty in awe knowing how many passed her by in order to become citizens of this grand republic. He has the image in his mind of how many of our country’s ancestors came to our shores only to be welcomed by Lady Liberty ... he feels the spirit of freedom as he gazes upon her.
At one point, the boy feels a drop of water fall (…) -
Spies, Lies and Wiretaps
31 January 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
Editorial
A bit over a week ago, President Bush and his men promised to provide the legal, constitutional and moral justifications for the sort of warrantless spying on Americans that has been illegal for nearly 30 years. Instead, we got the familiar mix of political spin, clumsy historical misinformation, contemptuous dismissals of civil liberties concerns, cynical attempts to paint dissents as anti-American and pro-terrorist, and a couple of big, dangerous lies.
The first was that the (…)
