24 July 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
by David Bacon
Huge national demonstrations in Mexico are now demanding a recount of the votes cast in the presidential election, tainted by allegations of vote fraud.
Mexico’s wealthiest families have a lot to lose. All benefited from Mexico’s conservative economic reforms, which the leading candidate, Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party, vows to continue. The Villareals’ Grupo Villacero, for instance, was virtually given the huge Sicartsa steel mill by the (…) -
One Minute a Day to Create Peace
16 July 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsThe amount of violence in the world is threatening all of us. It is time we use our power to create Peace. How can we do this? By taking one minute a day to generate feelings of Peace within ourselves and then focusing that energy upward and outward, we will cause a shift to move us from violence and conflict to Peace.
Why would this work? Science has shown us that we are all producing spurts of energy all the time through our emotions and thoughts. This energy, though we do not (…) -

By Sandy Kleffman
More than 400 nurses rallied Tuesday in downtown Oakland, hoping to prevent a legal decision they said could sharply restrict union membership and limit the power of the influential California Nurses Association and other labor groups.
This is a fight we’re going to win — they’re not going to bust our union,’’ Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the nurse’s union, told the crowd.
The noon event mirrored a rally in downtown Los Angeles that also drew several hundred (…) -

1 commentCindy Sheehan is on a hunger strike at the mall in Washington DC and she needs company!
Look at this beautiful park. Doesn’t this look like the perfect place for an extended protest?
"I often get told that I should "love America, or leave it." This is ridiculous logic and empty rhetoric. I love the country that I was born in and I love Americans. I am an American and so are my children. Casey was born and died a fine American who was abused by the same leaders that are abusing the (…) -

Not In Our Name: Vietnam, Iraq and the Voters’ Pledge
By Dan Ellsberg
According to recent opinion polls, most Iraqis don’t believe that we’re making things better or safer in their country. What does that say about the legitimacy of prolonged occupation, much less permanent American bases in Iraq? What does it mean for continued American armored patrols such as the one last November in Haditha, which, we now learn, led to the deaths of a Marine and 24 (…) -
We all know the unspeakable acts that ocurr during wars. Help end all forms of military sexual abuse
5 July 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
11 commentsDear people of common sense and reason ... I honor all who continue to spread words of hope that we can all live peaceably on this planet called Earth. While we are working to end the violence of country against country, religion against religion, and neighbor against neighbor, I hope that you will see the universal value of supporting The Suzanne Swift Petition. Many cruel and inhumane acts come out of war. Some more atrocious than others but all inflicting various degrees of harm (…)
