Home > Help Keep the Pressure on Congress
Wars and conflicts International USA
by United for Peace and Justice
The week before the Thanksgiving break events in
Congress were dazzling! For the first time since the
war in Iraq began, major divisions in Congress have
come to the surface - and that means significant new
opportunities for our work. Below is a quick re-cap of
what happened. While none of the initiatives totally
articulates our position, they are all important
developments. Now, more than ever before, there are
openings in the Congressional work. We are called take
advantage of those openings.
The members of Congress are still on their break, and
they will be in their home districts all of this week.
We realize this is not a lot of notice, but we
encourage your group to do whatever you can to let your
representatives and senators hear from their
constituents!
Legislators must be pressed to reject half-measures and
false starts on troop withdrawals. United for Peace and
Justice continues to call for the immediate and
complete withdrawal of all U.S. troops. Ask your
legislator to become a co-sponsor of H.R.4232, the End
the War in Iraq Act of 2005, introduced by Rep.
McGovern.
Here’s what your group can do:
1. Call the district offices of your representatives
and senators to see if you can set up a meeting this
week! Acknowledge that it usually takes longer to set
up a meeting, but this is urgent.
2. Organize an informational picket, a vigil or some
other protest in front of their offices, especially if
those offices are in busy areas.Hand out leaflets as
people pass by.
3. Show up at any public events your elected officials
might be at this week. Bring signs, hand out leaflets,
let the press know what you are doing.
4. Be sure to let your local media outlets know what’s
happening. If you get a meeting with your elected
officials, tell the media what happened.
5. For updated materials - including talking points,
bills and actions to ask for and more, please check the
