Cinderella in Rafah
24 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentFor the last week Palestinians in Rafah were reminded of what was, what could be and what is, writes Graham Usher in Rafah
For seven days Palestinians in Gaza experienced life without borders, and borders without fear: that is, without Israel. Thousands streamed back and forth through the punctured walls, earthworks and fences that separate Egypt from Gaza or "Rafah Sinai" from "Rafah sumud," the most lethal front-line of the Intifada.
How the fortresses were breached depends on who you (…) -
An Open Letter To Cindy Sheehan

27 commentsDear Mrs. Cindy Sheehan
I am writing to you to express my sympathy for the loss of your son. As a father of couples of children, I know very well what it means to a mother to lose a son, and if that loss is for the welfare and benefits of humanity or not. Mr. Bush has raised war against Iraq for no legitimate reasons, since it was not backed by UN at its start. In the months that followed March 2003, it became clear to the world that the issue of weapons of mass destruction and relation (…) -

A Political Rant

Many years ago, after marching through the Arch of Triumph in Paris on VE-Day, I asked for a short leave to try to contact relatives in Norway. I had not heard from them since 1940 and was worried that the war had not treated them kindly. However my request to visit Norway was denied. The reason was simple: all transportation was disrupted, roads impassable in many regions, the food shortage was acute, and (…) -

It has long been an article of faith among America’s senior policymakers — Democrats and Republicans alike — that military force is an effective tool for ensuring control over foreign sources of oil. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to embrace this view, in February 1945, when he promised King Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia that the United States would establish a military protectorate over his country in return for privileged access to Saudi oil — a (…) -

Congress is about to make one of those big decisions that marks an era. Unless wiser heads prevail, it may do it badly — making the wrong decision in the wrong way and about the wrong place. At stake is America’s greatest wildlife sanctuary, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. To dissuade Congress from this environmental tragedy, Americans must rally, and quickly.
Congress had its Pyrrhic energy victory this summer, with a new energy (…) -

Iraq denounced British forces on Tuesday over a dramatic rescue of two undercover soldiers that could stoke hostility to the army in increasingly volatile southern Iraq.
British troops used an armored fighting vehicle on Monday to burst into an Iraqi jail in search of soldiers held by police in Basra. The British commander said he learned they had been handed to militia and ordered their rescue from a nearby house.
"It is a very unfortunate development that the British (…) -

2 commentsIraqis have accused British special forces of planning a terrorist attack on Basra.
Sheikh Hassan al-Zarqani, a spokesperson for rebel Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, told Socialist Worker that the two undercover soldiers seized by Iraqi police last Monday were armed with explosives and a remote control detonator.
The soldiers were disguised as members of Sadr’s militia, the Mehdi Army. The arrests sparked protests after British troops backed by tanks attempted to free the soldiers from an (…)
