The American People Are Fed Up With Politicians Who Say One Thing And Do Another

Washington, Nov 19 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) gave the following speech tonight on the House floor on the House Republican Leadership’s plan to play politics with the war in Iraq and present a phony “withdrawal” bill:

“I have spent three years making the case against the war in Iraq, trying to convince Congress to avoid war, working with other members in leading nation-wide opposition to the war, developing an exit strategy once we got in, working with colleagues on both side of the aisle on plans to withdraw from Iraq and bring our troops home.

“I will vote against this resolution because it is a fraud. What more does anyone need to know, but that the sponsor himself has called for the defeat of his own proposition? If his real intention were to bring our troops home right now, why would he vote against his own resolution? Wake up America.

“The American people are fed up with politicians who say one thing and do another. Every one of conscience and intelligence knows the magnitude of withdrawing 150,000 troops requires a plan, and a sincere legislative effort.

“The American people deserve a real debate on Iraq: Where are the WMDs? Where is Osama Bin Laden? What did Iraq have to do with 9/11?

“This Congress, which is a coequal branch of government, which has the War Power and which has oversight responsibility, has the moral obligation to find out why almost everything of significance we were told about the war turned out to be false.

“Instead those who raise questions have their military service, or their honor impugned. They took John Kerry on a swift boat. But we will not let them take John Murtha on a swift boat, nor will they do it to the American people any longer as we are ready to stand up and to expose fakery when we see it.”

  • Wake up, Dennis. It may be a fraud. But if enough Representatives had the courage to vote for it (as did Cynthia McKinney (GA), Jose E. Serrano (N.Y.), Robert Wexler (Fla.)), wouldn’t it then pass? And wouldn’t it then have to be followed thorugh on? Dennis, Dennis, Dennis. It’s the old story—God, I don’t want to go blind; just let me do it until I need real thick glasses. The game’s up, Dennis.       They apparently all voted against because it was supposedly an attempt to water down the political value of the FAKE Bill attempt. Did it work?

  • Everywhere the Americans go in Iraq they get shot at, sniped at, bombed, etc, and on and on until you get my picture. The road from the so-called Green Zone to the freakin’ airport isn’t even secure. This makes me think, and don’t get me wrong, because I’ve been in favor of a US pull-out from day one, that it would be almost impossible for us to withdraw without taking unacceptable numbers of casualties. In other words, we CAN’T withdraw.

    ’Member how bloody easy it was to get in there in the first place? I wonder if that wasn’t part of their plan, to get us in there and spread us out and make it a living (and dying) Hell for our soldiers. And how many Iraqi soldiers do we have on the ground and ready to fight for us? 700 is it?

    Wow, that’s the problem: We CAN’T leave without them picking us off. We’d have to kill too many of them, as if we haven’t already, and they’d kill too many of us. With the polls showing him at 34%, do you think Bush wouldn’t get the hell out of there if he could? Hell yeah he would!

    • We’ll I see things from a bit different perspective.

      If the U.S. wanted out badly enough all they would have to do is anounce an immediate peaceful withdrawal effective immediately and arrange a ceae fire upon condition of massive lethal self defense measures upon any potential attackers during the evacuation. So we COULD leave if that was the intention.

      The main problem I think is obviously what happens to Iraq once the U.S. is gone? But, also really is it the U.S.’s problem to make sure Iraq has a U.S. compliant government before our troops leave and is that really a necessity.

      When one realizes this elective war was really about securing oil reserves and getting Iraq off the Euro and back onto the dollar (as two of the primary motives) one thinks like the bear that reaches into the bees nest for the honey, no matter how much it stings the ol bear can’t let go. Can’t let go of that CONTROL of oil and the bases the military has aquired. That would be ’cutting and running’ as the military/industrialist apologists try to persuade us. The problem is the BEES have nO plans to quit stinging and so like in Vietnam will see who backs down first. Is the honey worth the tens or hundreds or hundreds of thousands of deaths and permanently injured citizens of both countries and the massively outrageously suffocating debt that the U.S. is going to have to drag around for decades. Do we reall HAVE to be an Empire, isn’t a Republic preferable to the citizens, like our founders envisioned?

      We could just REALLY show the Iraqis what Democracy is all about. Let them hold a vote (monitored by reps. from a panel of nations) as to if they want the U.S. to ’aid’ them in setting up a Democracy or not and if they vote for us to go then we leave. That seems pretty Democratic to me. Leading by EXAMPLE. NOt just talking the talk, but Walking The Walk!

    • RIGHT ON!! There is no debate..Dick & W. will NEVER leave as they want control of the oiland the Country. As long as they have thousands of soldiers fighting for their profits and power why would they leave?

    • The US can declare all the peaceful withdrawls it wants, and it won’t make any difference. They’ll be fired upon when they try to leave, no question about it.

      What’s more, the Sunnis and the Shiites have it in for one another real bad, right? They both have provocateurs within the ranks of the other, who would like nothing better than to see the hapless, clueless US wipe out their opponents. In other words, let’s say we start to withdraw, and we pass thru or near a Sunni area; Shiite provocateurs could fire at the US and get the Sunnis wiped out by massive US retaliation. Same goes for Shiite strongholds, obviously. There goes your cease-fire! Shucks, they’re already doing that kind of thing now, using the US to wipe each other out.

      Speaking of which, a cease-fire wouldn’t work anyway, especially a unilateral one. It would be seen as a sign of political, if not military weakness, and wouldn’t last 24 minutes in that country.

      Nope, son, we’re stuck, we CAN’T get out in a timely and orderly fashion. Our troops have to fight their way to the airport now; can you imagine if we were actually trying to withdraw? It would be a bloodbath.

      One last thing: do you really think the Iraqis, Sunni, Shiite or whatever, give a flying poot about democracy? Come on now! The D-word is something we brought up, not them.

They also have direct links to Mob Organizations, I know because I was in a family for more than 26 years who are part of this.     Current news has been nibbling away at this and it’s escalating. The big picture is starting to materialize but the news isn’t linking it all together yet. For me, this has been most interesting to see how long it takes! So far, no one has put it together.

    The news is doing well to prepare everyone, however it is complex and difficult to accept. Readers should be advised to have an open mind that a major sized picture is still needed to be understood. Believe me, this is only the tip of the iceberg!

    The Corruption/Fraud part extends beyond our shores and involves direct links to the Mob and is linked with those involved from the top of our political structure, corporate structure and Military structure to all the way to the bottom.     The ongoing corruption is worse than your worst nightmare. As an example, my home town is Northbrook, IL and corruption here includes members of the Police Department all the way up through the Town Administration. My ex-brother-in-law lives there also and through his membership connection with Organized Crime has committed many murders plus much more. I personally know he has direct connections with corrupt Town officials and Police personal. The connections that allow for setups to steal and harm others will astonish you.     • Dennis has been one voice along with Waxman who continually opposed this illegal invasion. He hasn’t swayed from his position. I give him credit. He won’t have to say "my vote for the war was a mistake" because he didn’t vote for it. In fact, he was the only candidate with a "plan" for ending the invasion and occupation. Small wonder he lost - the powers that be don’t want the gravy train to end.

    • Well, the point of this discussion was supposed to be about the House of Representatives, so let me bring it back. The House, with this sham bill which nobody supported, has finally devolved into complete insignificance. They pass bills that are essentially against the public interest, like the bankruptcy bill and the recent energy and highway bills, which were nothing more than handouts to rich constituents and special interests.

      The House is not alone. The Senate is an equally worthless body. They willfully swear in athletes to testify on steroid abuse but fail to hold oil company executives to the same standards.

      The American people’s contempt for the federal government and in particular, the Congress, is evident to all. Just check the polls. Their approval numbers are as low or nearly as low as the president’s. Voting these people in or out of office is meaningless since they already have their own agendas and could barely care about the good of the American people.

      I would have liked to have seen ALL Democrats vote FOR the Republicans’ sneering, smug bill to immediately withdraw from Iraq. The American people have expressed their will over and over. We want out and we want out NOW.

      So, Dennis, I suggest you cease with all the bullshit rhetoric and stand up for the American and the Iraqi people and propose a bill that simply states that the US will commence withdrawing troops at a specific date and complete such withdrawal with all due speed. High-sounding plans, proposals and well-crafted ideas are what got us into this mess, and I daresay that same kind of thinking will keep us there longer. Stop planning and spinning and GET US THE HELL OUT OF THERE.

      On the other hand, the 45% of the country which completely ignores you will only grow to 55 or 65% sooner. If you like pretending to be in a position of power when the truth is that nobody is listening, just keep on with your absurditites. You certainly don’t control my life, nor the lives of many others.

      Maybe you and your fellow "members" should just do us all a favor and while you’re home for the holidays (on our dime, mind you), just stay there. Don’t come back, don’t reconvene, just stop altogether. Between the Congress and the Administration, you and your people come in a sorry second as the lesser of two evils.

      Get a life and stop bothering us with nonsense.

    3 hours per subject, 2 subjects per day; or
    2 hours per subject, 3 subjects per day.

    throw in workshops 4 kids during day & community at night.
    throw in weekend flea markets @ $10 per table = $300/per Saturday per school. Not bad.
    pretty soon they will have a clinic & dental bus coming to their school.
    the clinic run by the community & receiving recognition cirtificates from the school principal & PTA.

      that would never willingly submit to a fascist DICTATOR or regime. This is AMERICA! Remember we get rid of dictators like Saddam not create them, right?     • You’re quite right if the citizens don’t get rid of this ’paperless’ DIE-bold (interesting name) voting FRAUD equipment there is going to be an even harder uphill battle to save and revive what is left of this Free republic.

      Anyone aware of any strides to returning a VERIFIABLE voting process BACK to the citizens in the regard to a well thought out paper trail. Any states taking action to RID this menace off non examinable voting results from the Democratic process and give the citizens something they can feel secure with. If some people CAN cheat they will. Especially when theres BILLIONs or more to be made and positions of power worth KILLING for.

      America needs to make sure the voting process is secure and fair. Perhaps we’re going to have to call in a vote monitoring body from outside the U.S. to make sure we still have free elections.
