Man shot by Cheney has ’silent’ heart attack
Controversy erupts over White House handling of hunting accident news

Updated: 4:23 p.m. ET Feb. 14, 2006 CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot in or touching his heart and he had “a silent heart attack” Tuesday morning, hospital officials said.

The victim, Harry Whittington, was immediately moved back to the intensive care unit for further treatment, said Peter Banko, the administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial in Texas.

Banko said doctors conducting a regular check up on Whittington Tuesday morning discovered an irregularity in the heartbeat caused by a pellet, and they performed a cardiac catheterization around 10 a.m. EST.

Whittington was in stable condition after treatment and expressed a desire to leave the hospital, but Banko said they would probably keep him for another week to make sure that more birdshot does not move to other vital organs.

Cheney watched the news conference where doctors described Whittington’s complications. Then the vice president called him, wished him well and asked if there was anything that he needed.

A statement from Cheney’s office said, “The vice president said that he stood ready to assist. Mr. Whittington’s spirits were good, but obviously his situation deserves the careful monitoring that his doctors are providing.”

Cheney, an experienced hunter, has not spoken publicly about the accident. Critics of the Bush administration called for more answers from Cheney himself.

  • If Cheney was quail hunting, wouldn’t he be shooting more downward than to have hit the lawyer in the face, chest and shoulders? Seems like he was aiming to kill a human!

    • I have been wondering about that too. Unless the bird had just taken off, there is no way it would have been close enough to the ground. I think Cheney heard something move and took a shot in the general direction of the sound.

  • I am just so sick of guys who have it all getting more, then smearing anyones face in it who doesn’t like it! We have been sold under and I doubt any American could form a group capable of rising up in a revolution at this point. All Americans have been stripped of any form of self reliance. If the power goes out for 2 days people are ready to kill over the slightest nessecity. Look at the Katrina victims, like mad animals at one point in the struggle. We are all mostly mindless T.V. robots at this point and the tide is quickly rising. Who will save your family when the chips fall. Most don’t even own a weapon of any sort because they have been demonized by the media and only true criminals who don’t care have them anymore. America you have been sold out since the government of the 50’s. We are better off getting our news from some "wacky" conspiracy news outlet than the actual news anymore. I would rather be called a nut than be among the eventual misinformed! Is the dollar still down¿

  • This whole thing is stupid and Whitey as America.

Stop to think. A man uses a shotgun to hunt a bird about the size of a small hen. Oh, Great Whitey Hunter, how brave of you. Seems the blood of Iraqis on your hands is not enough.

Oh, sinner man, where will you run to?
Oh, sinner man, where will you run to?

    On that fateful day.
