Tomgram: The CIA’s La Dolce Vita War on Terror
The Spies Who Came In from the Hot Tub
Be All That You Can Charge
By Tom Engelhardt
Like so much else in our moment, it contravened laws the U.S. had once signed onto, pretzeled the English language, went directly to the darkside, was connected to various administration lies and manipulations that preceded the invasion of Iraq, and was based on taking the American taxpayer to the cleaners. I’m talking about a now-notorious Bush (…)

Former Agents Criticize Bush Over CIA Leak
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush’s failure to take action against a top aide involved in the outing of a covert CIA operative sends the wrong message’’ overseas, former U.S. intelligence officials said on Friday.
At a hearing sponsored by Democrats, the retired agents said U.S. intelligence gathering had been damaged by the leak of Valerie Plame’s name two years ago after her husband, former diplomat Joseph Wilson, criticized the White (…) -

By Jason Leopold
Looks like Karl Rove did break the law, the same federal law that got Martha Stewart sentenced to six months in prison.
It now appears that Rove, President Bush’s chief of staff, may have lied to the FBI in October 2003-a federal crime-when he was questioned by federal agents who were investigating the source responsible for leaking the true identity of an undercover CIA operative to the media.
During questioning by the FBI about his (…) -

Memo Becomes Focus in CIA Leak Probe
By BARRY SCHWEID
WASHINGTON (AP) - A State Department memo that has caught the attention of prosecutors describes a CIA officer’s role in sending her husband to Africa and disputes administration claims that Iraq was shopping for uranium, a retired department official said Tuesday.
The classified memo was sent to Air Force One just after former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson went public with his assertions that the Bush administration overstated the (…) -

Former Intelligence Officers De-Spin Rightwing Assault on Valerie Wilson
21 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
One of the pieces of disinformation being peddled by the Save-Rove gang (see the item below) is that Valerie Wilson wasn’t really undercover. So the leak? No harm done and no crime committed (since the relevant law says a leak only counts as a crime if the exposed officer was working under cover). But how do they know that Joseph Wilson’s wife wasn’t a clandestine officer in a serious manner? Well, they don’t. There’s nothing on the public record that fully explains her duties at the CIA. (…)

FLASHBACK: PLAMEGATE 2003: Naming of agent ’was aimed at discrediting CIA’
19 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By Edward Alden in Washington Financial Times October 25 2003
The Bush administration’s exposure of a clandestine Central Intelligence Agency operative was part of a campaign aimed at discrediting US intelligence agencies for not supporting White House claims that Saddam Hussein was reconstituting Iraq’s nuclear weapons programme, former agency officials said yesterday.
In a rare hearing called by Senate Democratic leaders, the officials said the White House engaged in pressure and (…) -

Reporter: Top Cheney Aide Among Sources
19 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By PETE YOST
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney’s top aide was among the sources for a Time magazine reporter’s story about the identity of a CIA officer, the reporter said Sunday.
Until last week, the White House had insisted for nearly two years that vice presidential chief of staff Lewis Libby and presidential adviser Karl Rove were not involved in the leaks of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity.
The White House refused last week to repeat those assertions when it was (…) -

5 commentsBush is on the rack over a revelation that his close aide Karl Rove exposed a CIA agent
by Paul Harris in Washington
It was a question the White House press corps once believed unthinkable. Has President George W Bush lost confidence in his political guru, Karl Rove? If simply posing the question was a surprise last week, the answer - or, more accurately, the lack of one - was an even greater shock.
When Bush faced reporters at the White House last Wednesday, he dodged questions on (…)
