COLUMBUS, Ohio - With support from John Kerry’s campaign, two third-party candidates for president officially asked on Tuesday for a recount in Ohio, the state that put President Bush over the top in November.
The requests, mailed to all 88 counties, were expected to arrive by Wednesday.
Generally, county election boards must agree to a recount, as long as the parties bringing the challenge pay for it. And the Green and Libertarian parties collected enough donations to cover the required (…)

Is Revolution Possible in the US ?
9 December 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
7 commentsONE SEGMENT of progressives reacted to George Bush’s victory in the 2004 presidential election with despair. “Maybe this time,” Nation magazine columnist Katha Pollitt commented bitterly, “the voters chose what they actually want: Nationalism, pre-emptive war, order not justice, ‘safety’ through torture, backlash against women and gays, a gulf between haves and have-nots, government largesse for their churches and a my-way-or-the-highway president.”
Liberal author Garry Wills concluded (…) -

Uncle Sam Wants Your Kids - Now!

We’ll soon have 150,000 U.S. troops stuck in the ever-expanding Iraqi quagmire, a number that will probably grow even larger before Iraq holds elections presently scheduled for the end of January ’05.
Maintaining such a force is a logistical and personnel nightmare for every grunt in Iraq. And according to several Pentagon number crunchers, it’s also driving the top brass bonkers.
Meanwhile the insurgents continue cutting our supply lines and whacking our fighting (…) -
Kucinich: “The Iraqis Will Not Be Handed Freedom Based On Lies”

18 commentsCongressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, gave the following speech today on the House floor:
“Nearly thirteen hundred brave American men and women have sacrificed their lives in Iraq. Yet the central reasons for the US invasion have fallen apart: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. No proof that Iraq was instrumental with Al Queda’s role in 9/11. Iraq was not trying to get nuclear materials from (…) -

1 commentBy Jane Stillwater The Ghost of Christmas Future appeared to me last night. "What did he look like? What did he say?" "He wore a caveman outfit and rode a bike. It was a Schwinn. He showed me what I would look like after I gained 50 pounds and told me to lay off the eggnog." "That’s all? That’s IT?" "Nope. He also showed me what will happen to Americans if they keep that idiot George Bush in office." It was not a pretty picture. He took me to the (…)

Seeking the DNC Chair-What Direction Would Dean Go?
8 December 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
Months after he fled the Democratic primaries with his tail between his legs, Howard Dean is again in the spotlight, where is (half-heartedly) seeking the chair of Democratic National Committee. Dean hopes his influence can steer the Democratic Party away from future electoral defeats. But even if Dean is victorious, he will not be guiding the Democrats’ foreign policy agenda in a new direction. The fact is, Dean’s own foreign policy agenda is strikingly similar to that of George W. Bush. (…)
