Amid raucous debate in Congress about an exit strategy from Iraq, U.S. commanders on the ground have already launched plans to close bases and withdraw troops in the coming year, according to two congressmen who returned from Iraq this week.
"They wouldn’t put a hard date on it, but clearly the planning is at a very mature level," Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., said. "We can shrink down the number of bases as we shrink down the number of Americans."
Rep. Mark Kennedy, R-Minn., (…)

The Antiwar Movement Isn’t Where You Think It Is
6 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsBy Dave Stratman,
On October 29 of this year there was an antiwar rally on Boston Common. My wife and I and our daughter and two young granddaughters took part. After a few speakers one of the rally organizers announced to loud cheers that a contingent of antiwar demonstrators had gone to join gay activists who had been since 8 a.m. two blocks away outside the Tremont Temple Baptist Church. Later many other antiwar demonstrators plus the rally sound truck reportedly joined the gay (…) -
AXIOMS OF THE WORLD

by David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda
One frequent criticism of my articles for PRAVDA evolves from my propensity to reference my past articles in more recent ones. Some attribute this proclivity to vanity, laziness or some other ulterior motive.
The truth, however, is not as complicated or self-serving. I simply want to remind readers that there were some, like myself, who recognized the corruption, venality, hypocrisy and mendacity of George W. Bush and his minions long before (…) -
What Kind of Incendiary Bombs were used against Civilians in Iraq

The earlier pre-mixed ’napalm’ bomb utilized benzene, gasoline and polystyrene. The Pentagon destroyed its stockpile of napalm canisters, which had been stored near Camp Pendleton at the Fallbrook Naval Weapons Station, in April 2001.
Following is my understanding of the present MK77 - mod 5 bomb. Hundreds of partially loaded MK77 - mod 5 firebombs were stored on pre-positioned ammunition ships overseas. Those ships were unloaded in Kuwait during the weeks preceding the (…) -

2 commentsNeither Bush nor Blair is in a position to take a high moral line on Iran’s nuclear programme
by Tony Benn
Britain has played a leading role in the negotiations with Iran about its nuclear programme and the risk that it might lead to the development of an atomic bomb, and may well seek to take the matter to the UN security council.
Given that the prime minister himself is determined to upgrade Trident and appears to be committed to a new series of nuclear power stations, his position (…) -

After a recent Bush speech to Annapolis Cadets the Pentagon announced a “growing consensus” to cut down on the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.
It seems to me a stronger statement would have been that, in view of very strong criticism, Bush is now, at least, considering doing “something” about the Iraq quagmire. He’s not considering doing very much but is pulling out all emotional stops to defend his (…) -

I’m back from Thanksgiving with my wife’s family and I’ve got some first-hand feedback from the troops on Iraq, leaving Iraq, and Murtha.
You see, my wife is a former military officer and her brother is an active-duty Major, decorated Army Ranger, and West Point graduate with more than 15 years in and about to ship out to Afghanistan. My wife is a good liberal on military issues, while my brother-in-law has always been a (…) -

President George W. Bush gave an eloquent and emotional speech at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland recently to another captive audience of bright and shiny cadets, plus enough admirals, generals and politicians to let the public think that someone with some sense was backing him up.
He included a 35-page policy paper "OUR NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR VICTORY IN IRAQ," a rehash of his arguments for the past 3 years, including (…) -

TRAVELING around southern Iraq in the late 1990s to investigate the effects of U.N. economic sanctions on ordinary Iraqis, Jesuit Father Simon Harak stopped at a hospital in Basra. Meeting with him and his colleagues from the anti-sanction group Voices in the Wilderness, Dr. Jenan Hassan briefed them about the medical horrors she and other doctors were confronting as a result of the use of depleted uranium (DU) weapons by the U.S. Army in southern Iraq during the 1991 (…) -
US: White phosphorus use legitimate
4 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentThe top US general has defended the use of white phosphorus munitions in combat against Iraqi fighters as a legitimate tool of the military.
Allegations that civilians were victims of white phosphorus bombs in the Falluja battle last year has put the spotlight on a weapon that showers down incendiary particles that burn right through skin.
"A bullet goes through skin even faster than white phosphorus does," General Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a Pentagon (…)
